Acronis 11 clone disk completes without cloning

Thread needs solution

Hi:

I am using Acronis Trueimage home version 11.0 build 8027 under Windoze XP Pro /SP 3. I have used this version with no problems until now. A few days ago, I cloned my laptop drive (C: drive with three additional drives in a logical partition). Cloning worked great, just like always.

Then I did another clone in the same way to the same drive. Acronis completed within about 4 minutes, with the "congratulations - press any key to shutdown" screen.

So I deleted logical partitions on the target drive, kept the boot partition, added a new partition and formatted it. Then I did the clone again. Same failure.

So at this point, Acronis will no longer clone my laptop. This is a critical problem.

By the way, is there a newer version than build 8027? The only thing that is available for download on the Acronis website is a generic trial version.

Help please!

Thanks,

Fred

The last build of TI 11 was 8101 which will be available to you in your account assuming you registered the serial number.

Are you cloning in the Windows environment or from the CD?

Thanks, Colin. There is nothing in my account. I'll contact Acronis and hope that doing so is not wasted effort.

I am cloning under Windows. I start the clone and then Acronis reboots to do the actual cline.

Fred

If you have lost your serial number, it will appear in v11 under the help/about menu. You could then register it in your account.

Well, I upgraded to the latest build. The Acronis page that lists downloads has no download links on it. I finally found an upgrade option that expanded on my products page under my account.

The problem still remains.

Fred

If the drive being cloned contains the OS, it is better to clone from the recovery CD so that no Windows processes interfere. However, I would recommend making an image of your drive before attempting to make any more clones, just in case something goes wrong.

Hi, Colin:

Well, I have been cloning my main system drives with Acronis for years with no problems until now. Note that Acronis sets up a batch script and then reboots. The clone script is executed at reboot, before Windows comes online.

Fred

Would only comment that I now have the same problem :-(
Have cloned my disk (as a backup) without problems many times.
But when I try now it says everything went well, but nothing is copied.
The destination disk is not erased either (is as it were before cloning).
This is very frustration as I now cannot make any backup or change disks.
So the product I payed for is now 100% useless to me :-(

@both,

Does cloning from the rescue CD work?

@Lars,

Are you also using XP SP3?

Hi:

Don't know. Never tried it that way - that's not good workflow for my backup procedures.

Yes, I'm on Windoze XP / SP3.

I was finally able to contact support and get a live human. They told me that version 11 was unsupported and that I should purchase version 2011 ( a completely different version).

So I did, and I have been dealing with problems with that version for several months now.

Is there a good competitive backup product that works?

Fred

Fredo,

You've thrown another variable into the mix, is your problem with cloning caused by TIH11 or TIH2011?

If you upgraded and started using 2011 during the life of this thread, did you uninstall TI11 before installing 2011?

Is the problem with 2011 the same as with v11?

I found a solution when reading similar topics on the net...

I found a thread about completion without anything beeing copied when cloning from one internal drive to another.

The fix for this was to disconnect/unplug all USB-devices that may interfer.

I tried this, unplugging my printer (that has a card-reader), and my web-camera.
I'm pretty sure the printer was connect the last time I cloned, but I could be wrong.

Anyway, after unplugging the USB-devices the cloning is working as it should !!

Strange error though. Can't Acrois tell a USB-card-reader or a web-camera from a external HDD?

> You've thrown another variable into the mix, is your problem with cloning caused by TIH11 or TIH2011?

The problem I described is related to version 11. At the insistence of tech support, I upgraded to 2011 and encountered an entirely new set of problems.

Don't these idiots ever QA their software? What about usability testing?

> did you uninstall TI11 before installing 2011?

Yes. In addition, I have not posted additional information to this thread since I upgraded.

> Is the problem with 2011 the same as with v11?

No; an entirely new set of problems have arisen.

Can you recommend a good backup utility by a competitor?

@Fredo,

If there was a fundamental problem between TI11 and the deeper parts of your OS, I wouldn't be surprised if 2011 didn't inherit the problem and possibly a few more.

I was going to ask if TI11 was working properly in other respects such as standard imaging, but if you now have 2011 on the system, I would suggest either starting a new thread listing what is happening or perhaps not happening, and, as you'll be within your 30 day period, you'll be able to raise a support ticket.

The fact TI11 had been working and then suddenly stopped cloning, means one avenue to be investigated is, had anything altered on your machine; new hardware, AV/Firewall update, XP security patch etc.

@Lars-Erik
TI has always had problems with some external USB equipment, often with hubs and card readers attached. As far as card readers are concerned, many report themselves as mass storage devices but either misreport their USB descripters and transaction type, or have device drivers that confuse TI's Windows API to TIH low level driver translation - snapman.sys

Hi, Colin:

I have been in contact with tech support on the 2011 version issues.

Regarding USB connectivity, I plug my backup drives directly into the front USB port of the Dell computer I am backing up. No hub is involved, although I heard somewhere that the front USB ports go through an internal hub while the rear ports do not go through a hub.

Anyway, thanks for your response. I'll deal with version 2011 outside of this thread.
