Acronis 2012 issues with USB flash drives
Hello,
I am experiencing issues with ATI 2012 and USB flash drives.
Whenever I connect my Kingston made 4GB flash drive to the system, the device detection takes around 5 seconds and there is an message in event viewer stating "The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk3\DR4". Using Windows 7 64-bit OS. This has been the case with two system now, my old Intel C2D E8400+Gigabyte P35C-DS9R motherboard and now with my new system which is Intel core5i 2500K with Gigabyte Gigabyte Z68XP-UD4 motherboard. I transferred the OS with ATI 2012 when I upgraded the system.
That was the case with my older Kingston USB flash drive and I did not mind, but since then I have received 2x4GB Kingston flash drives which work even worse than the first one. When I connect the new flash drives, the Windows drive detection takes at least 20 seconds and again there are messages in the event viewer "The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk3\DR4".
I did a lot of testing and after I uninstalled the ATI 2012 from the system, the USB flash drives work better and there are no more "The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk3\DR4" errors in event viewer.

After completing the Acronis KB http://kb.acronis.com/content/26062 , all of my USB flash drives work better.
Thanks eD B again!

Same here. I wasn't experiencing any errors. It was just taking the computer over a minute to detect the USB flash drives. Applied the fix to both of my computers and the USB flash drives are being recognized as quickly as they should be (within 5 seconds). Thanks for the reference to the KB article. Have a great day.

-Phil

Hmm, I wish the "KB fix" worked for me, but it doesn't. When plugging in a USB storage device, I get the usual tone which indicates that the new USB device has been seen, but then I can wait until the cows come home, and nothing ever shows up in Windows Explorer, nor in "Disk Management". By the way when I unplug the errant device, I do get the unmounting tone as usual. This happens when attempting to mount USB external drives, USB thumb drives, ipods, etc. And it happens on all USB ports.
If I uninstall THI, use the clean-up utility, restore to an earlier restore point (before the THI installation), the USBs magically come back to life. So this is clearly clearly a THI issue.

One thing you might try when the devices are not being seen is to open the Device Manager and have it search for new hardware.

Thanks Grover for the suggestion. Ok I did a "Scan for Hardware Changes" in Device Manager and nothing new shows up in the Device Manager or in Windows Explorer. The USB disk drives show up in Device Manager in the "Disk drives" section, but they have a yellow exclamation point on their icon there, If you click on one item you get the following message for "device status":
"
Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)
"
By the way, uninstalling the device driver and forcing Windows to reinstall seems to have no effect and does not fix the problem.

I have everything from system freezes to BSOD when connecting USB flash drives and TI running. USB HDDs can also be problematic. Will apply the KB fix and see if it helps.

Good luck with that! Pls let us know how it goes, ok?

Just did the driver updates and have been playing with multiple USB flash drives while also using a USB HDD. Tried inserting and removing multiple thumb drives at the same time, reading and writing, etc. So far it's been very smooth and no issues. Why doesn't Acronis release these updates as a general program update? Seems like a no-brainer to me.

Hi Rd, I am happy for you! It seems like it fixed your problem. Acronis probably hasn't released it because it is probably a kludge which works in some instances and not in others. In my case it does not work. I might try to uninstall the "magic" drivers and reinstall them, I am trying to leave no stone unturned. I really don't want to ditch TIH but then again I do need my USB ports to work. Thanks for the update. -Dennis
PS By the way, what operating system are you using? I am on W7 Home Premium 64-bit on a HP laptop.

Reporting back. I was provided with a new, non-public build, which Acronis hoped would solve my online backup problems, which it did only partially - still can't use AOB, but at least ATIH2012 now "sees" my online backups. The new build knocked out the USB fix and reapplying the files (Repair) did not resolve the issue. Once again, USB drives are taking a minute or more to be recognized.
I am awaiting the arrival of a new high-end performance PC for video editing (Maingear Shift) and I have reluctantly decided after years of using Acronis products (9 registered products) and months spent on these forums trying to get ATIH 2011 and then ATH2012 to work properly, that I am not going to cripple my new computer with Acronis products. I am off to purchase Paragon Backup and Recovery Suite. I wish all of you luck trying to get Acronis products to work. I am just going to eat my losses and move on. How many dollars and how many hours have I wasted?! Enough.
Have a great day.
Regards,
-Phil

Hi Phil, How sad that you have to leave Acronis. But I totally agree that a B/U application should not cripple our machines or jeopardize their safety. For goodness sake, that is WHY we buy B/U software to SAFEGUARD our machines. I will take a look at Paragon, although I am sure I will already miss some of Acronis' functionality alas. But I too cannot be fooling around forever trying to get this program to work. In my case, my USB ports are not mouting volumes properly. At least in your case, if you wait long enough, something mounts. In my case I could wait until the cows come home, and still no volume can be mounted. I just don't get it why Acronis is not more concerned about this. Do they really want their most loyal customers to drift away?

Hi Sam0t,
When I had ATIH 2012 Build #5545 installed I had BIG flash drive issuers, installing these drivers worked wonderfully! However with those new drivers installed they prevent you from doing an auto update to the new version build #6131 and crash telling you the upgrade cannot uninstall the newer drivers.
So I restored and uninstalled ATIH completely and installed the update from scratch using the installer from my download page on Acronis. Everything went well but the flash drive incompatibility issue was back so I tried to reinstall those updated drivers and rebooted to a BSOD!!!!
I had to restore off a boot disk and am now still stuck with build #5545 and not sure what to do.
We are running another thread here: http://forum.acronis.com/forum/26682 about similar problems, not the flash drive issue unfortunately.
Any ideas? Maybe Acronis will update those driver again to support build #6131? I will scan the KB but I never have any luck.
Thanks for any help!!

Joe,
Is not this issue listed under the Build 6131, Release Notes - List of Known Issues?
"Acronis True Image Home 2012 may prevent a USB flash drive from being properly detected under Windows. A fix will be available soon."
I am not sure when soon is, but I am waiting for it before I try ATIH 2012 again, if I try it again. The backup supplied with Windows 7 seems to be working for me so far.

Oh, I did not see that! Thanks. Yes that is the reason they released the additional drivers for build #5545 in:
"KB 26062: Acronis True Image Home 2012: USB Mass Storage Devices Are Not Detected in Windows"
I had no idea they were working on a fix for #6131. So instead of taking the time to troubleshoot this on my end I will just wait and keep checking the forums and KB articles.
Thank you very much!!!

Microsoft has a HotFix, KB2615763, for Windows-7 that talks about USB drivers being incorrect after SP1 is installed. It caused me a lot of "grief" with USB Flash Drives, and I installed the hotfix yesterday - so far so good.
That HotFix might also address some of these problems, too.
Go to "http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2615763" and click on the link to download the hotfix at the upper left of the article. It has both the x86 and x64 versions available.
