Acronis Backup Explorer

Thread needs solution

According to the instruction manual, when I click on the gear icon within a backup box, there should be an option labeled "Explore and Recover" which allows you to open the Acronis Backup Explorer. However, when I click the gear icon, I don't see the "Explore and Recover" option but instead see an option in it's place that says "Back up now." The thing is, I just completed the backup and yet it still says this and am I unsure as to how to open the Acronis Backup Explorer. Any advice? Thanks!

TripleC11,

Sometimes it takes TIH a few moments to updates its' database, do you still have that problem after closing and re-opening 2012?

It's a bug in ati 2012. It doesn't update the database and the list correctly.

Since, upon restart, ati scans for backups, it shood find the new one when you restart. Unfortunantely, it might not group the new one with the others made by the same "task" but which were created on schedule.

seems, I discovered a similar bug: Some backup-tasks report, that the last update was e.g. one week ago. But when I open the "recover" dialog, i can see the (succesfully created) daily updates of the last days.

Please track and fix the issue.

This is a user forum. You might want to post a messge to customer service.

Thanks for the feedback. I have restarted the program and everything remains the same. There is not an "Explore and Recover" option and instead it says "Back up now." Acronis has not been helpful either when I ask them...they just tell me to view the files through my hard drive which is never mentioned in the instruction manual. Any other ideas?

TripleC11,

Are the archives you want to recover from an earlier version of TIH?

Are they part of a chain from which one or more images are missing?

Where are they stored - external drive, NAS, internal drive, DVD etc?

If you haven't already made a backup or image, could you try doing so and see of that is recoverable?

Could you post a screen/snipshot of what you see - below is what you should be seeing.

ATI won't offer Explore if it doesn't think there are any backups under that task -- could this be another manifestation of the file orphan issue?

I've also seen this behavior since 2012 -- not often, but sometimes -- it is very confusing. It appears that the database looses track of some components of a backup chain or looses the entire chain. I have ocasionally tried to re-import the backup -- somes it works and sometimes it does not. I have also been left with orphan files when I have deleted portions of backup chains in the backup browser. My backups are stored on NAS.

Under the Backup and Recovery tab, I have one Disk Backup, and one Differential backup.
For the Differential backup, in the pop-up menu, I do not see the menu item "Explore and Recover". So I cannot get to the Backup Explorer to delete versions.
This is not a case of the application losing file as mentioned by another user. The menu item is missing. Is there an Acronis Tech Rep who can understand that issue???

For the Disk backup, the pop up menu is correct.
I reported this bug 4 months ago. And it is an old issue reported here in the user forum.

I am running True Image Home 2012 on Win7x64

Why doesn't Acronis fix this??
This used to be a good application, but I have found many problems in this version.

mdougc,

can you post a screen shot of what you see in ATI?

mdougc,

Does the master image allow recovery and it is just the differential that doesn't?

mdougc,
In post #9, if I am understanding correctly.
The differential cannot be created without a prior full so I am "assuming" that the diff was created by the full backup which is displayed. If true, then there should on be only one task listed and clicking that task should show both backups as part of the timeslice.

All information about both backups can be found in the main task.

This would indicate that the error which has occurred is the display of the diff backup as a task. This can be removed via the option to remove task from list. It may be necessary to hover the mouse pointer over the area where the edit link should appear.

This type error occurred several times in 2011 but I have not seen it in 2012. This may be related to the continual display and posting of old *.tib files which most people would prefer not to see.

Yes, of course there is a full backup followed by about 75 differential backups.
It is displaying the NAME of the task, which is a backup type = differential.
That is not an error. It is the design of the product.

I don't how to get a screen shot of a pop up context menu. It disappears when I start the Snipping Tool.

Use the older Windows Start Button + Print Screen instead, this will need to be pasted into Windows Paint and then converted to JPG or PNG for uploading to the forum. In Vista and W7, Paint allows auto conversion if you select 'Save As'.

@Pat L
Screenshot attached.
This is the popup when I rightclick on the (Differential scheme) FILE backup task.
Note that the "Explore and Recover" menu item is missing.

The menu is correct for the Disk Backup task below that.

If you look backward in these postings, at user TripleC11 posted Thu, 2011-09-29 00:21,
he reported the same thing. This is NOT new.

This might just be by design for a file backup. In past versions, you would have an "explorer and recover" button for a disk backup, but a "explore all versions" link for file backup...

If you click on recover, you should see the different versions of your backup.

@Pat L
Clicking on Recover does NOT show versions of the backup.
Clicking on Open Location does show the versions, but it opens them in Windows Explorer, and you are not supposed to delete versions there. And this is what I want to do.

Below, I have pasted the text from the user manual. Note that it references a menu item "Explore and Recover". This is the item that I am trying to say is not appearing, as evidenced by my previously attached screen shot.
I am trying to delete versions without using Windows Explorer. My purpose is to keep a grandfather copy, and then start a new series of differential backups. But, due to this Acronis bug, there seems to be no alternative but to delete the entire backup.

*Begin paste from user manual*
Deleting backups and backup versions
You may want to delete backups and backup versions you no longer need. Acronis True Image Home 2012 stores information on the backups in a metadata information database.

Therefore, deleting unneeded backup files in Windows Explorer will not delete information about these backups from the database, and Acronis True Image Home 2012 will consider that they still exist.

This will result in errors when the program tries to perform operations on the backups that no longer exist. So you must only remove obsolete backups and backup versions by using the tools provided by Acronis True Image Home 2012.

To delete an entire backup:

Find the corresponding backup box on the Backup and recovery tab of Acronis True Image Home 2012. Click the gear icon to open the Operations menu and then click Delete.

When you delete an entire backup, all its versions will be deleted as well.

To delete a specific backup version:

On the Backup and recovery tab, find the corresponding backup box, click Explore and recover.
In Backup explorer, right-click on the time line the version you want to delete, and then click Delete version.
When you delete a backup version, please remember that this version may have dependent versions. In this case the dependent versions will be deleted as well, because data recovery from such versions becomes impossible.

If you delete a full backup version - the program will also delete all subsequent incremental and differential versions till the next full version.
If you delete an incremental backup version or a differential backup version - the program will also delete all subsequent incremental versions till the next full or differential version.
*End paste from user manual*

@Pat L
My apologies... I can, in fact see all versions when I click Recover. It is just in a different format than before. And it DOES NOT use the Acronis Explorer. They seem to have scrapped that utility.
After clicking the Recovery button, it shows the different versions down below in a scrolling calendar bar. And this is where you can right click and delete a version.
The problem is that Acronis did not update the Help File or the user manual.
And this has wasted many hours of my time.

This new way is very inefficient to do what I want to do.
So I am saving the full backup version to a new folder as my grandfather copy, and then deleting the task and all versions in the original folder.

I have used Acronis many years, but I think they are fast going downhill.
It is time to consider another application.

Thank you very much taking time to help on this.
