Acronis True Image Home 2010 v 5055 + v 6053 Endless Bad Sectors With FAT32
I just want to write this here as information for others.
Whenever I restored a partition with version 5055 on RAID 0 my partition was full of bad sectors. So check with chkdsk afterwards. Since I use version 6053 this problem is gone.
To get rid of the bad sectors you might have to resize the partition. Make it smaller and then bigger again.
This all on WinXP SP3 Raid 0 Intel Matrix latest.

Version 7046 and no change - still the same bad sector problem. I am the only one with this problem?

So the RAID is hardware based.
There has to be another explanation here, as even if you start a recovery from within Windows, it still reboots to the Linux version to complete.
The fact it happens with a FAT32 but not NTFS system makes me wonder if this is occuring in the imaging rather than the restoring.
Did you make the images in Windows or from the CD?
Does the RAID require a rebuild after restore?
What size drives are you using and are they IDE or Sata?

Hi Colin,
first of all thank you very much for your response. This problem makes TI useless for me.
But to the facts. If it runs from within WinXP SP3 32 bit then it creates the bad sector problem. If it runs from the CD then it works problem free. The bad sectors are created when writing the image already and not when restoring. So they are in the backup already. It does not make any difference if you switch the ignore bad sectors in Acronis on or off. But the disks do not have any bad sectors. This I can see when I create the image with the CD version - no bad sectors. The disks are 2 Seagate 1 TB with 2 RAID areas with 1 TB each. Both Areas work in RAID 0. They use Intel Matrix latest version on a Gigabyte GA-P55-UD6 board (about 6 months on the market so pretty new standard) and they are SATA.
The problem partition is FAT 32 and the cluster size is not standard but 32 - because of the strip size of the RAID 0 I set it bigger. If I restore with or without bad sectors - the RAID disk works problem free. Have been using it with WinXP, Win 7 32 and Win 7 64 and never had any problems with RAID.
But I am afraid that Acronis has to provide a fix for the software. Perhaps there is a driver that can fix the problem. There are no settings that can change anything as far as I know. If you have any idea please let me know.

Peter,
IF, and that is still a big IF, this is occuring in the making of the image then it sounds as though something like snapman.sys is having a problem with either FAT32 or with the cluster size.
Although this is a pain, have you made an image from the CD or only restored from it? I'm interested in whether if imaging from the CD you get the same result.

Hi Colin,
When I use the CD for creating the image there is no problem. This is the only way I can use Acronis when creating an image. I switched in the meantime to a USB stick because I need it so often ;-)
In respect of the IF - there is no IF. I checked when the problem occurs. I created the image inside the OS and loaded it and created it with the CD version and loaded it. I did this many times in the meantime because I hope every new Acronis version will be the fix. The problem occurs only when I create the backup inside the OS. It is not a problem of the restore.

Hello all,
Please download Acronis Report utility available here and run it, create a report and attach the file to your next post. Please compress the Acronis Report output file into an archive (e.g. with WinZip) and attach to your message by browsing for the archive.
This would provide us with detailed information on the hard disk partition structure.
Thank you.

Hello Oleg,
Thank you very much for your response. I work for the government and have very confidential data on my computer. Therefore I am of course not allowed to run anything what collects any data and send it out. I might be fired before the data reach you ;-)
Perhaps there is a different solution and I can tell you the required data. It is not so much anyway - a FAT32 partition with 49 GB and a cluster size of 32 kb - what is not standard for this size. It runs on Intel RAID 0 on a Gigabyte GA-P55-UD6 with the driver STOR_allOS_9.6.0.1014_PV.exe with the latest BIOS F8. The disks are 2 x 1 TB Seagate with two RAID 0 areas of the same size. The FAT32 is on the first one. The first RAID area with the problem partition looks like this:
FAT32 with WinXP SP3 and cluster 32 - problems out of XP, no problems with CD
NTFS with Win7 (set not active of course when XP runs) - no problems out of Win7, no problems with CD
NTFS with data
Extended
4 NTFS partitions with data
It must be somehow a software driver problem since it works with the CD but not from the OS. So the question might be what is different and this could be the answer for the problem. I can try and run the backup/restore from the Win7 OS and look at the results then if this helps. But this system has access to the same data as the XP - so confidential. But perhaps this gives a different result for this FAT32 partition with the WinXP SP3 on it. So far I checked the backup only with WinXP since this is the OS on the FAT32 partition. Please let me know what I should do.
Thank You,
Peter

John,
The Acronis info utility just collects hard drive structure layout, not actual contents. It is in plain English so you could always run it, look through it, and see if there is anything you feel unhappy about and make a decision on whether to withhold all or part.

Hello all,
Thank you for posting.
Peter,
We are unable to troubleshoot the issue without exchanging with several diagnostic files, we should analyze software and hardware environments. If the rules allow you to send the files via Private Message, you can use this forum feature. Only appropriate Acronis staff will be able to view them.
Colin, thank you for the explanations, they are very useful.
We are looking forward to hearing back from you at your earliest convenience. If the provided information is not clear or if you have any other questions do not hesitate to post them and we will be glad to answer.
Thank you.

Thank you both very much for your great support.
It is not that I do not trust Acronis. It is simply not allowed that I run such a tool that collects data and has nothing to do with Acronis or any other company. I will talk to the responsible people and if they allow it I will create a new restore with problems and post the data here as far as possible.
Thank you again and I am sorry that I create a problem. But not every computer is for gaming :-)
Peter
