Advice on default exclusions please. Any problem changing the defaults ?

Thread needs solution

I'm using TI2014 with W8.1 and basically its fine, I rely on it and use it often... however :)

When I restore an image I find that the install of Libre Office (specifically the spell checker) is always broken. The fix is simple once you know, and that is to delete the folder marked 'Bundled' and simply let it recreate next time Libre runs.

Question... why does Acronis do this ? I spotted another thread in the TI2015 forum that mentioned excluded folders and so I had a look on mine to see what if any the defaults were. Is it possible that the Libre Office issue is down to these exclusions ? I had cause to make and restore from a 'sector by sector' full disk image made via the bootable media and this DID NOT break Libre Office.

So specifically, would there be any issue in allowing these excluded folders to be added to a backup ? Is there some valid reason they are not included in the first place ?

The images show the Libre Office folder that must be deleted, its contents and finally my default settings.

Hi Mooly,
There is no problem modifying the default exclusions. It is likely that one of them is keeping a file or dependency from being copied, "breaking' your Libre function until its recreated. The exclusions are in place to keep back up images as small as is reasonably possible. The option to make changes is there to fit different users needs.

Thanks for the quick reply, appreciate it. I shall go ahead then and give it a try with these two exclusions added back into the mix. It would be great if it fixes this issue.

I will update this once I know the result... which could be a while admittedly.

Thanks.

Well, I haven't tried a restore from these new settings as yet but one thing I just have to mention after altering the exclusions setting is this... its a whole lot quicker calculating the 'backup time', the process that runs before the backup commences. Previously it was around 1.5 to 2 minutes but now is launching into the backup after just 25 seconds or so. The long time spent 'calculating' is something I have seen mentioned many times in other threads. Could the locating of files to exclude from a backup be one of the reasons ? Its certainly made a dramatic difference on my set up. I keep a very clean and tidy system with an absolute minimal of temp files anyway, many will have hundreds more than me.

Good news. I made a chain of 3 incrementals and restored an image as a test. Libre Office works ! Yea :)

As mentioned above though, the reduction in time for Acronis to begin the backups now that there are no exclusions is a major plus point in its own right.
