After cloning, windows works but Drive D: the recovery consol does not work

Thread needs solution

Hello everyone,

I just got done cloning my old hard drive to a new one. Using Windows XP Media center edition on a desktop. Old HD was 80GB SATA, contains C: which is the system drive and also contains all the programs etc. D: is only 9GB or so and contains the windows recovery consol. Added drive is Hitachi 500GB SATA. Cloning copied both the c: and D: to the new drive (although the software made the D: drive equal to 28GB and balance the C:, the original D: drive was 8.5GB only, I don't know if this matters). Disconnected the old drive. Booted from the new drive without any problem. All programs seem to work fine, except:

two things: From the new Hard drive, tried to do a backup using the True image (Home 2010). When doing it on DVDs, after 3 DVDs it terminates the procedure due to some error (i don't know how to see why). Same thing when I tired to back up to the hard drive itself.

Second problem: Since the c: seemed to be working fine, I wanted to check out the D:. So I tried the "windows system restore". The way it worked with the original HD, while booting the windows gives choice of booting to the windows or go to the recovery console, if you click on the recovery console option then it goes to recovery partition and you can restore the computer to factory or repair windows. With the new hard drive, it still gives that choice but if the recovery console is selected, the computer goes to a flashing cursor and nothing further happens. I wanted to make certain that it is problem with the new drive and not the windows itself, I disconnected the new drive, reconnected the old and was able to get into the recovery console without problem. So i assume the problem is with the cloning process?

Going to windows explorer and checking the contents of the drive D on the new hard drive does show it to be the "Recovery console".

So, there is some problem somewhere in the cloning process. How do i fix the recovery consol problem and how do i successfully backup.

Please help. Thank you.

Oh, another thing. Before I used True Image, I tried the Norton Ghost 10 which made a copy of the disk successfully but the windows booting hanged in the middle everytime. Then I tried the DriveimageXML. That did not even copy the hard drive, it kept hanging up on "cannot lock the drive". If this gives you any insight into what the problem may be.

Thank you.
