After using ATI 2012 re-clone, Win 7 PRO claims it's not genuine.

Thread needs solution

I had a Lenovo Laptop that began to have performance problems, the result was that my hard drive was bad.

I replaced the internal 500GB Hitachi HDD, with a Western Digital 500GB Caviar Blue drive. I tried several cloning tools, non were able to clone the drive, mostly I think because the new drive used advanced formatting and the geometry was different. Finally I downloaded the WD's authorized version of Acronis True Image and was able to clone the disk. I did loose some portions of the recovery, some blocks on the original driver were bad, but the system booted up fine with the new drive, no real issues. (I had to ensure that the new drive was in the laptop, and the source was connected via a USB dock).

Now, a week later, my Windows 7 Professional software is complaining that it is not a genuine edition and I need to purchase it. I ran the Microsoft Diagnostic utility and sure enough, it thinks files have changed. (see post below). How do I resolve this? I am very close to installing Linux on this thing, and picking up a MacBookPro instead.

P.S. During the clone, I allowed ATI to do the clone method that it could resize on the fly, being that the geometry is different. The first time I tried I forced it to do an exact clone, and that one would not boot.

Try re-activating W7, you can also try re-entering the COA code from the Windows Label on the bottom of the laptop in the 'Change my key' option. I had this happen once on a Lenovo X61, but in my case a reboot whilst connected to the internet solved the problem.

If the IBM file (SLP file) that works in conjunction with the BIOS SLIC table which is part of the OEM activation system is missing, I'm not sure what can be done other than re-installing the original Lenovo factory image or contacting Microsoft.

What happens if you run SLUI.exe from the 'run' box

Colin,

I do not have my COA, at least not handy. I am sure I have it with my purchase docs for the laptop. Usually they are stuck to the laptop underneath, but I do not have that on this laptop. I used a magic jelly bean key finder to gather the product keys and such, in case they would work... the product key and such, but I am not sure they would work either; I 've tried using my COA keys on other operating systems, like XP, and they never worked for me.

All that being said, I attempted to restore to the complete factory default image using IBM's restore partition... that failed. There must be some lost blocks on that image. I then re-attempted the clone using manual method and forcing it to be an exact image copy. This time, it appears that Windows is Activated. In the command line window I type "activate windows" and it comes back that it's activated successfully. However, if I go to http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/validate it complains that files have been modified and adjusted and I need to purchase windows 7 pro at $149.

I don't know what to do....

I have one product, Quickbooks, that I need to have run on Windows or MAC. MACBook Pro=$2,000, plus Quickbooks for MAC=$199. Windows 7 re-purchase... $149. I think I'll go for the MAC. :)

Snoopy,

Without access to the COA Microsoft may not be all that sympathetic. I can only suggest contacting Microsoft explain that Windows is activated - does Windows itself in system information also say 'activated' (press the Windows button + Pause/Break)?

Colin,

I have the COA, I just have to locate it in my files for when I purchased the laptop.

On this laptop, I don't have a pause/break key. I have a pause key, F11, and a break key, ESC. However, if I click on Start->Computer (right click)->Properties it says "Windows is Activated" at the bottom and provides a Product ID. If I click on the Start->Run command and type "activate" I get the attached verification that windows is activated. SO, everything looks normal to me. However, it did before too.

Running the genuine tool via Microsoft's website, indicates I need to purchase a valid version.

Running the MGAdiag tool still indicates some tampered files.

The idea of spending any time on a microsoft support call seems like it would take weeks; if it's anything like their software.

Thanks.

A very good point to put in the memory banks dev-anon, thanks - check if a new driver is required for the new disk when dealing with brand name PC's.

Damn, that fixed it!!!!!!!!!

I turned my laptop on and was immediately greeted with a windows banner saying my windows install was not genuine.

I downloaded the driver you recommended, rebooted twice, and now all validation methods shows that it's valid.

Thanks to all, I greatly appreciate all your help. I can't believe a driver could cause this issue... especially when I cloned the disk; however, the new geometry and advanced formatting could have been the issue.

To clarify, what you have to do to eliminate "This computer is not running genuine windows" pop-up after cloning your hard drive but you know your windows is activated: Get the Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver from one of two places, depending on whether you have a brand name or generic computer, and then reactivate windows online. For generic, all versions of Windows XP thru 8, go to: http://downloadcenter.intel.com/SearchResult.aspx?lang=eng&ProductFamil…)
For my brand, Lenovo Thinkpad T410-T430, for Win7 (32 bit): http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?LegacyDocID=MIGR-…
Don't forget to reactivate Windows, using your product i.d., or you'll still get the "Not genuine windows" pop-up.
