Archive corrupt, but able to consolidate

Archive on external USB2 drive

I tried to validate an archive I had just moved to another USB drive and it failed to validate. I tried again on the original, and that failed too. Then for whatever reason I tried to consolidate the archive (original backup + 1 incremental) and that succeeded. Makes no sense, unless consolidation doesn't check for validity along the way (which is possible, I suppose, but pretty strange).

I'm left to conclude that validation test is not correct, but sure would like a little more confidence.
(and no, I haven't worked through the entire flowchart, copying files to my internal drive, etc. Thought I'd ask first if anyone knew if a corrupt archive can be consolidated.)
