ATI 2010 backups fail when 2nd DVD inserted (updated)
I just upgraded from Acronis 9 to 2010 and tried the "One click" backup.
It asked me to insert a recordable media in my first DVD drive (I have 2 DVD writeable drives)
The first DVD was filled and ejected and ATI asked for the next DVD.
I inserted the next DVD and got an error dialog
"Error occurred while creating the file."
No matter how many blank DVDs I inserted it didn't like the 2nd DVD.
If I restarted the whole backup it would write to the DVD it rejected showing that the media was blank.
I have attached the error dialog.
NOTE: if I selected the "Browse" button I was able to point to the other DVD drive and it would write out the 2nd volume. So the discs are blank but for some reason ATI doesn't think so.
So here is the latest... I tried a regular backup of my documents and pointed to the removable DVD drive and got the exact same error. The first disc was written and the 2nd fails.
I am attaching the error log from the failing backup.

Thx for confirmation that I'm not alone.
I ended up buying a 1.5T external drive and did full backups but I plan to backup my photos to DVD and store them in my safetly deposit box as an off site backup. Can't do that until this problem is fixed.
I plan to contact support directly during the week. I'll append what I find out.

Great! Keep me informed, guess we are the only two in whole wide world (www) that use DVD's to backup some of our data...considered external hdd but just not ready to spend $$$$ to perform something that's appears to be rather simple...good luck with customer support....

I am having the same problem. So far, support has not responded. Well let me correct that. They responded 2 days later asking me if the problem was resolved. Funny how they never actually responded with a suggested solution. They must have thought the problem was magically being fixed while they worked on other issues.
Are you having any better results? If so, please post!!

Anyone get a response from customer support???

Why bother with TI? Just write the photo files using your favorite burning program and be sure to use the "verify after burning" feature.
If you want to compress, assuming they are RAW and not jpg, then use a compression program first if your burning software doesn't offer it. If you want to do incrementals then use a program like SyncBack, Karens Replicator, etc.
I never backup my data files with any program, TI included, that stuffs the files into a proprietary container file. If something goes wrong with the archive then every file can be unrecoverable.

I've sent 3 emails to support in the last 2 weeks with no response other that an automated email assuming that my problem was "resolved".
Seems to be a problem there.

I have the same problem: I downloaded ATI Home 2010 Standard Upgrade on 10/03/2009 and tried to create a full C:-backup on DVD+RWs. The first DVD was written without any problems; the second one was not accepted ( "Error occurred while creating the file"). I tried with some (!) more new and intact DVDs with the same result.
On 10/05 I had nice live chat with a Dilip Kumar from Acronis Customer Central: He told me: "It is a known issue". He requested to try outside windows environment and check how it works. He sent me an email with an ISO image, which I downloaded and burned on a CD using an Acronis recommended software (ISORecorderV2RC1.msi). With its features I tried the backup again: and again the first DVD was perfectly performed, the second one always failed.
As Philip Kumar told me: "If it still does not work we need to investigate your case", I sent an email replying to his and attached the requested "AcronisInfo", a report and a screenshot.
Since 10/05 they have apparently been "investigating my case"; so far, support has not responded.
Seems indeed to be a problem there.

Thanks for the update....please keep us informed should you hear further...
Later:
Seems there be new build coming out in about a month, maybe they will address this problem too....... http://forum.acronis.com/forum/4485 ...maybe???

Some news: Replying to 2 more of my emails the a-m Dilip sent me an automated email and another personal one. He wrote: "As a workaround I would advise you to take the backup on an internal hard drive by "Archive splitting" in which you can do the splitting of size 4GB each. Once the backup is taken please get the same validated and then burn it on the DVD’s using third party software like Nero."
I did exactly as he advised, and successfully burned a 4GB-splitted backup of my C drive on 3 DVD's with Nero. But this is definitely not the solution of the problem: I want a full computer-backup on bootable DVD's, automatically updated monthly. ATI Home 2010 cannot provide this task, ATI Home 2009 could.
Besides that there are some other changes for the worse from ATI Home 2009 to 2010: The start window doesn't show pie charts of the current status of the hard drive and the ASZ, there are no information's shown about the size of full or incremental backups, a list of the deleted elements after using the "system shredder" is not available, under "backup options" cannot be switched between the buttons "standard commands" and "custom commands": all features are available in ATI Home 2009.
I think Acronis did a quick and rather careless job with the new ATI Home 2010. If there'll be no update or new build, I'll uninstall the 2010 version and use ATI Home 2009 again. The 30 Euros for the upgrade will be lost.

I don't know if this will help, I long since abandoned DVDs as a backup off-line storage media especially since it isn't too hard these days to find an 80GB or so HD loose somewhere.
Can you leave the image on a HD and then do what I thnk you are doing. Make a monthly incremental update. You should be able to burn the incremental to a DVD. Naturally, you would have to test the recovery of doing this.

Thanks for your comment. I´ll do as you advised. I think I´ll not be able to boot the external HD over the USB connection, but I´ll take a bootable CD or DVD. Thanks again.

You should be aware that an image on more than 2 or 3 DVDs is likely to drive you crazy having to swap the DVDs in and out when doing a restore. TI does not read all of one DVD, then the next, then the next, etc. This is one reason that using an external drive is preferred.
When I used DVDs as a third level backup, I always intended to copy them to some sort of a HD before attempting a restore.

Good news: I'm not the only one with the problem...
Bad news: I contacted support and gave them all the info (logs etc.) and so far have not heard back. I emailed to get an update and no reponse. I hope that things settle down and they can address some of the problems with an update.
I still want to be able to use DVD backup but because I couldn't wait I ended up buying an external drive. As I write this append I realized that I should not put all my eggs in that basket without running a restore from a boot CD to ensure that it can see my external drive.

For those who need DVD backup, I found that the Acronis Bootable CD performs for me. I have successfully used on both of my PCs at home (Vista SP2, 32 bit).
Tried 2009 (was using ver 10), but too many issues (reported with little feedback). Thought 2010 would solve my problems, some were fixed, but as you have found out a "new one" popped up. Still looking at script editing problems, etc. As you all have noted, all 'pertinent' info provided, but 'may take a few days' to resolve!?!
Patience is a virtue they say, but it would be nice if we could get some progress feedback.

I've burned a few coasters before finding this thread. Is there a fix for this? I'm running the trial of 2010 because I have Windows 7 now (I own 2009 and that works fine for Vista).
I tried using rescue media, but I'm unable to complete a full backup from bootable media because this is a trial. Of course, why would I purchase it if it doesn't work and Acronis refuses to give any feedback on the issue.

I have the same exact problem. How do you know if the problem has been fixed or even looked at?
- Accedi per poter commentare

The problem will not be fixed until a new build is released...expect a new build sometime in November... http://forum.acronis.com/forum/4485 .......I'm not hopeful that it will be fixed since no one from Acronis commented on this thread....however, we'll find out when the new build is released...

New Customer - Just purchased ATI 2010 - and I'm a little frustrated as I'm having the exact same problem - make me wonder if the money I spent thinking this was a good product was work it!
MS Windows Vista Ultimate
Single Multi CD/DVD Writer
First Disk compleates ok
consecutive disk all fail with :
event code="3" id="15" level="2" message="Error occurred while writing to the file. (0x40003)
Tag = 0x15602567D340AB27" module="4" time="1256999083"
Very frustrated!

Problem´s fixed now. Build 6.029, released 11/03/2009, does the requested job. Thanks for the solution, shame on them for their information policy. So: take care, till next time.
- Accedi per poter commentare

Yep, it is...thanks to all who sent support request to Acronis...now if we could only adjust that 10 minute time limit on insertion of disks or if remaining time to completion display was accurate, I would say they nailed it 100%, but I'm thankful they got it to work...

It's been like that since ATI10 was replaced with the dreaded ATI11, each one showing less promise than the former.

I installed the latest patch 6029 and was able to do a mult-disc backup. I even did a validation on it and the results were good.
I suppose the real test is to restore the directory to another place!

I ran into the same problem and found a way around the problem. The trick is to click "Browse" and select the same DVD drive (in my case it's a Read/Write drive). Then accept the current name for the backup file (MyBackup.tib) and click "OK" for the DVD. I was directed to label each DVD in correct numeric order after it was full, except the last DVD. The last DVD wasn't full when my backup was complete.
I now have what I hope is a complete 5 DVD backup. Can it be used to restore any/all of my C:\ files?
Enquiring minds want to know!

The real test is to imagine your system disk went south and you had to put in a new hdisk and boot form the BootCD to start a restore -- go through all the stpes to start a restore except that very last Proceed step. If you can get that far, you are 99.9% certain you can do a restore. Short of that, things are much less certain.
Btw, with 5 DVDs, during a restore yo will be doing lots of disk swaps back and forth as files can be spread over various optical disks. Sit close and have great patience.
