ATI 2011 authentication "fails" for QNAP server

Thread needs solution

I have just purchased this product, and I'm having troouble setting up a file backup to a QNAP storage device.
When I reach the point of selecting the destination location for the backup, and select the appropriate directory on the QNAP, ATI prompts for authentication. I enter the correct userid and password, and ATI responds with "Connection failed".
I've checked the server logs, and I can see that ATI actually authenticated successfully with the server, but for some reason ATI doesn't seem to realise this.
The only way I can get the backup onto the QNAP is to alter permissions on the share and make it public. ATI then does not prompt for authentication, and all seems OK.

John,

One other thing to consider is whether your backup will be accessible from the recovery CD if you hard disk fails.

OK. If you have a mapped drive pointing at the server mounted on your computer, disconnect it. Then launch ATI and try to authenticate. It looks like ATI 2011 has trouble with network authentication when there is a mapped drive.

No luck. I removed the drive mappings and restarted the workstation. Confirmed mappings no longer exist. ATI still has the same issue. Looking at the server logs shows that authentication was successful, but ATI still comes up with the "Connection failed" message.

In looking at the logs, I've noticed that when I am setting up the backup, and I select the file server in ATI, it appears that ATI attempts to logon to the server with the user id "NetworkService". This fails authentication as there is no such user. This happens before ATI asks for credentials.

EDIT:
Well, this is interesting. I created a new user on the server with the name "NetworkService" with no password. I made this new user a member of the admin group on the server. ATI now connects to the server automatically with the user id "NetworkService", does not ask for any credentials, and performs the backup.

EDIT 2:
I removed the NetworkService user from the admin group, and removed this user's access to the share location I want to backup to. ATI now asks for credentials, authentication succeeds, but ATI is back to reporting "connection failed". This doesn't surprise me.

Hello John and Pat,

Thank you for your posts and your kind help is appreciated Pat.

John, I would really appreciate if you could provide us with some additional diagnostic information because this is an interesting issue and we would like to investigate it.

I found your open support case and do you mind sending the support representative working on the case some info please?

1. With the wireshark utility running try connecting to your NAS device a few times so that the wireshark utility captures useful info.

2. AcronisInfo report.

3. Model of the NAS.

I will send you a private message with an ftp link in case the wireshark output is too big for an attachment.

Please let me know if you have additional questions.

Thank you.

Well, it appears that the latest release of ATI (build 6857) has fixed my authentication problem. Nothing about this fix is mentioned in the release notes, but entering credentials now successfully establishes a connection. Entering the wrong credentials gets the conneciton failed message, as expected.

Guess I'm a happy camper now.

Guess I spoke too soon.

I updated to the latest version (Update 2 build 6868) and the authentication problem has come back. ATIH can no longer backup to the NAS.

The NAS logs show that authentication has occurred successfully, but ATIH refuses to believe it, and continues to report "Connection failed".

As an added bonus, ATIH how seems to see duplicate entries for network workstations in the browse list when trying to pick a backup destination location. See the attached screen grab.

Hello John,

Thank you very much for the follow-up.

I am terribly sorry for the inconvenience.

If you do not mind, I would like to follow-up with a private message to discuss some additional troubleshooting questions.

Please let me know if you need additional help.

Thank you.

Thanks Anton. I'm following the steps in the private message.

One other thing. If I start the ATIH recovery CD or press F11 at startup to start recovery, I can browse to the NAS and authentication works fine, so it is only during the setup of a backup that this problem seems to occur.

Hi all,

Did this get resolved?

I've just started trying to connect to my QNAP to backup via Acronis but although the QNAP shows Acronis connecting via FTP, the Acronis software reports a connection failure. This is at the backup setup stage where you select the destination.

However, I can apparently connect via Acronis as I can see the folders of the FTP server on the QNAP and can navigate them but then Acronis asks for a username and password at the folder level.

Frustrating.

Thanks.
David

Sort of. Anton gave me access to a beta of ATIH 2012, and the problem seems to be resolved in the beta.

I am using ATIH 2012 plus for some time now and just recently I am trying to backup to a QNAP NAS. It seems that I suffer from the same problem as mentioned in this threat.

I cannot select any share on the NAS (which can be accessed under W7). ATIH 2012 sees the NAS in the target window as part of the Windows Network but no shares are shown at all.

Since the above threat stops at date 09-08-2011, does somebody know if the problem still exist?

The build number of my ATIH 2012 Plus is 5545 and reported as the latest version.

Hope to get some help since I am more or less stocked.
