ATI 2012 has disabled my Windows backup need help restoring it
I installed and used ATI2012 almost a year ago and have since uninstalled it but it is now disabling my Windows Backup Service. No matter how I try to open it to change settings nothing happens. from looking online this is a well known issue with Acronis and kb26912 is supposed to fix it. So I searched for that on the Acronis site and then downloaded and unzipped it but when I try to run it I get an error message and it won't run so it's not helping me at all.
I am trying to go in and delete old backups to just keep a current one but because of this issue, I'm unable to do so.
Please help

James, thank you for the suggestion but that doesn't work either I get the same error message, not all data was successfully written to the registry some keys are open or in use by another process.
That's the exact same message I get with the first KB fix and there doesn't seem to be any option to right click and run as admin or something like that.
Any ideas?

1. Click Start, type Regedit.exe and press ENTER:
2. Go to the following branch:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT \ CLSID \ {B98A2BEA-7D42-4558-8BD1-832F41BAC6FD}
3. Right-click on the key and choose Permissions…
(The above registry key and sub keys are owned by TrustedInstaller by default, and you may have to take ownership of the keys in order to restore the default values. ResourceDLL and ResourceID seems to be the two values that Acronis True Image modifies in order to integrate with the shell.)
4. Click Advanced, and select the Owner tab.
5. Look at the Current owner information. If TrustedInstaller is currently the owner of the key, select Administrators from the list below, select Replace owner on subcontainers and objects, and then click OK.
6. Select Administrators, allow Full Control permission and click OK.
7. Select File from the menu and then select Import, then browse to the resourcedll.reg file you downloaded from Acronis and import the settings.
You’ve fixed the Windows 7 Backup shell folder key. Next, restore TrustedInstaller back as the owner of the above registry key, and revoke Full Control permission for the Administrators group.
Reinstate TrustedInstaller as the Owner
8. Right-click on the {B98A2BEA-7D42-4558-8BD1-832F41BAC6FD} key and choose Permissions…Click Advanced, and select the Owner tab.
9. Click Advanced, and select the Owner tab.
10. Click Other users or groups… button
11. Type NT Service\TrustedInstaller in the text box, and click OK. This adds TrustedInstaller group to the listing.
12. With TrustedInstaller selected, select Replace owner on subcontainers and objects, and then click OK.
13. Select Administrators, uncheck Full Control and click OK.

Thanks again but I'd already done that step with the same results. It says it can't import it. I tried it again but it will not run I get the same error.
I'm also unable to add back Trusted Installer now that I have done that step of replacing it as owner, when I type in NT Service\TrustedInstaller as told, it says it can't find it. Trusted installer still shows up under the permissions tab, but not the owner tab.
So I haven't fixed the actual problem, and now I seem to be halfway through the fix without being able to go back.
I appreciate the help but this is incredibly frustrating Acronis really needs to do something about this that doesn't require customers to get into editing their registry etc.

Are you running from an administrative account?
Try running regedit.exe elevated to run as an administrator, the try the file import again. Be sure to right click on the resourcedll.reg and check to make sure Windows does not have the file blocked.

When i open regedit I right click to select run as administrator. When i try to import i get that error message. I apologize but I don't understand the part about resourcedll.reg, I don't know what that is or how to check if windows has it blocked? Assuming you mean the file I'm trying to import I right click on that but I don't see anything that tells me its blocked by windows when I look at properties?

The resourcedll.reg file is the file you extracted from resourcedll.zip (which you downloaded from Acronis). If you right-click on the resourcedll.reg file, and select Properties, on the General Tab, if the file is being blocked by Windows, there will be a button near the bottom of the General Tab to select "unblock". If that button does not appear, than the file is not being "blocked" by Windows.
Please go through the steps again in post #3.
In step 5 be sure you have the Administrators (group) (not the Administrator (User)) as the owner and be sure to select the check box to "Replace owner on subcontainers and objects", then click okay.
In step 6, give all of the Users and Groups listed in the Security Tab of the Permissions Window, that will still be open, Full access and click okay.
Then either try the import again, or double click on the resorcedll.reg file to import it into the registry.
It is not critical to change the permissions back to the original values. You should be able to change the owner to NT Service\TrustedInstaller by typing the name into the object name field and clicking apply (being sure to have the "Replace owner on subcontainers and objects" selected, then click on ok.
I have followed the instructions in post #3 and they work fine on both my Windows 7 and Windows 8 systems.
If you still have problems after trying again, paste some screen shots of the steps you are taking and I'll see if I can help you out.

Thanks James but it's still not working and I need to leave for the day so I'll have to try again tomorrow and see but I am pretty clear I did every step as said and I still can't import the file.
Appreciate the help will see if I can finish tomorrow.

I've run into this problem on a system before.
I've found that if you re-install 2012. Then disable Acronis control panel integration (http://kb.acronis.com/content/26912) from within 2012, and then (while Acronis is still installed), double click the resourcedll.reg file or Open regedit.exe and import the resourcedll.reg file, this sometimes will let you merge the registry entries.
If you don't want to install 2012 again, see the next post......

** You can also manually edit the registry key: **
Open Regedit.exe and navigate to: [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{B98A2BEA-7D42-4558-8BD1-832F41BAC6FD}\Instance\InitPropertyBag].
1. Right-click on the InitPropertyBag key and select Permissions
2. Click on "advanced"
3. Select the "owner tab"
4. Change "System" or "Trusted Installer" to "your user account" Click Apply, then OK
5. On the original "Permissions Screen", click on the name (your user account) you just selected and select the "full control" box.
(Sometimes the box will appear "Grayed out or dimmed", but you can still select it). If your user name is not in the list, click add, and then add you user account with Full control. (You can give all the accounts/groups listed "Full" control if you wish.)
6. Click OK to close the "Permissions screen"
7. Change the ResourceDLL value to "%SystemRoot%\System32\sdcpl.dll" (without the quotes)
8. Finally change the ResourceID to "14" Hexadecimal or ("20" Decimal) (without the quotes)
If these values do not exist, they can be created by clicking "New", from the Regedit menu, while InitPropertyBag is highlighted, and selecting "Expandable String Value" for "ResourceDLL", and "DWord (32 bit) Value" for "ResourceID". See attached screen shot of the correct entries.
It is a good idea to change the Owner on InitPropertBags back to System (or NT Service\TrustedInstaller) when you are finished, but not absolutely necessary.
