ATI 2014 incremental method with auto clean up-not cleaning up

Thread needs solution

I have ATI 2014
-- (Win XP, Dell XPS 400), backing up the C: Drive (Maxtor 7V250FO)

I have ATI set to Incremental method with auto cleanup:
-- Create a full version after every 3 incremental versions
-- Store no more than 4 recent version chains

The pictures (file attachment in the .DOC file) show:
-- ATI 2014: There may not be enough free space
-- Disk Backup Options
-- File display of Buffalo-LBU3 backup drive with 4 chains of one full plus 3 incremental
-- Backup by Sector/Unallocated space

So what is preventing ATI from auto-cleanup to make room for new backups?

First, your supplied illustrations were excellent.

As best I can ascertain, the program is functioning as intended and cleanup/deletion of old chains will occur after next full backup. You need approximately 180-200gb of free space for the next Full B5 to complete.

Your configuration shows that your storage quota is 4 chains or 16 files. Your backup retention quota (4 chains) has been met but not exceeded. Scheduled deletion of oldest chain will not occur until your quota is exceeded--which will occur seconds after completion of next Full B5. You need approximate 180-200gb of free space for the next Full B5 to complete. Is there that much free space on the destination target disk?

Perhaps one option might be to reduce the number of chains you want to keep from 4 to 3. Doing so would allow your backups to function with normal deletion each future full backup, once space is made available via deletion of chain B1.

Possible Actions involves editing the task "MaXtor 7V250FO" which I do not like to do as the task rarely works as expected following user edits.

1. Use the procedures outlined in my GH5 example and use the program to delete your oldest B1 chain of 4 files. Repeat! this is done from within the program.
GH5. How to delete backup files using Acronis Backup 'Explorer'

2. Change the backup scheme from "store 4" to "store 3 recent version chains"

3. Run validation on Inc B4_S4_V1 and response "ignore" FOUR TIMES as you are prompted to ignore each file deletion. You may need to run Validation more than once until it acts normally.

4. Once validation runs successfully, then from inside the backup task, try creating a new manual backup via the "Back UP NOW".

5, If the backup runs successfully, the Full B5 will be created and the chain B2 will have been deleted.
After FULL B5 has completed, what remains should be chain B3 (4 files), chain B4 (4 files) and Full B5 with no inc. B5 inc will be added as your future backups are performed.
Automatic deletion of the oldest chain will auto occur after each future FULL BACKUP.

Should the above not succeed, then your next choice is to
stop using TASK Maxtor 7V250FO (stop schedule)
create(or clone) a new task 7V250FO-1 keeping 3 chains and delete the current tasks (manually) as space is needed for new backups.

Don't use the same task name and don't use the same folder for tib file storage.

Edit:
If you are using "Disk Backup Options/Image creation mode/ and have checked "backup sector by sector " or "backup unallocated space"
using this option is NOT necessary for most users providing all your files are Windows type files.
I see nothing in your configuration that indicates this option is really needed, and it consumes unnecessay storage space.

Hi GroverH-

I will follow your suggestions, which looks like will work. I have deleted backup files before.

I looked at currently available space in which I have 114GB available. So auto cleanup would never work since I will always have some space available, but not sufficient, meaning the quota would not be exceeded prior to the 5th backup; thus, I would never get this to auto-clean. this quota seems to get exceed during the 5th backup, yes?

Thanks for you immediate response. I will give it try this weekend, and if any questions, I will post them. Again, thanks.

If you your scheme has a retention quota of 3 chains rather than 4, you shoulod have enough space for it to work normally
