ATI does not delete old backups OR shows error but is deleting old files

Thread needs solution

Hi,

First of all: where is the German Forum now?!

Anyway...

A bug which I find in all Versions backwards from Version 11 to at least 2012 is:

When you change your backups for some reasons, the problems starts: For example you tell ATI to only keep 2 backup-files it works in the beginning and later if you change something in times/dates/or the number of backups you want to keep, the problems starts...

ATI will either not delete the old backups (this bug I have seen most of the times) OR it does so but shows errors...

I "work" with this error now for years on many computers and many versions of ATI and can not find any solution in the net.

Here it is ATI 2012 for example: I told ATI to keep 2 backup files and I got the error that my volume is full. Thats correct because ATI kept 3 files plus the new one. On other systems I found dozens of backups instead of 7 as I told ATI.

The only thing I found out which helps is to delete the backup and start a new one with the new times/numbers of backups or whatever you/I want to change. But that is not OK and I really would like to know what is wrong with ATI in all these versions. I am not yet sure with 2013 if there is the same bug as at least from 11 up to 2012. I am doing no automatic backups with 2013 yet so I am not sure if there is the same problem.

I would be happy if someone could solve that case :).

Oh I do only full-backups!

Thanks!

Looks like that the experiences I have with many computers and different ATI Versions nobody else made and even Acronis Support does not know the answer.

Strange that it is not only one computer with ATI but also different versions.

Here is one copy of mail I get from ATI on one of the computers where ATI works but sends an e-mail with errors but works and deletes old files:

"XY wartet auf einen Benutzereingriff.
Beschreibung:

And here is the copy of the mail with the OK-information:

I just replaced some "privat" information with "XY".

And as I said it happens only when you change something in the automatic backup, especially the numbers of backups you want to keep. All ATI versions since about ATI 10, 2013 not sure yet.

Thanks for any information.

Im am really suprisded that nobody else has these bugs...

Unsolved since years...

And more suprised that even Acronis does not know.

Since most of us don't speak German, we don't know what those messages say.

German forum: http://forum.acronis.com/forums/acronis-true-image-home-discussions/deu…

Thanks for the link to the german forum!

OK I agree with the German messages, but I described the error too (and there are also German people here) and right now I was deleting backup-files which should be deleted by Acronis (I want to keep 2 and I had 5...). Also this bug started from Version 10 at least to 2012 (2013 not sure yet). Same bugs on Windows XP and 7 (32 and 64 bit).

I will test the German forum, maybe they have an idea.

Thanks!

These issues are present for many users using almost all versions including 2013. There are numerous posts about these problems. Editing a task in True Image has always led to unpredictable results with retention and or file naming conventions, and it is highly recommend to never edit a task, but to create a new one. These problems are more likey when editing the retention/cleanup options of the task.

In addition, if any of the backup image files are deleted or moved using Windows Explorer and you are using one of the more current versions of True Image, the database that tracks the images files that are related to the backup tasks will not be accurate and the tasks may fail or give unpredictable results when doing validations, consolidations or cleanup, within the program manually or when using scheduled tasks.

Thanks.

All I did in these cases was to change the number of backups I want to keep. Nothing else was changed.

OK now I know that does does not work and I have to make new tasks, even if the software allows me to do that.

Thanks!

It's not so much that it definitely doesn't work. Often it works fine to edit a task. But, for some reason edited tasks seem to have a higher failure rate or lead to unexpected results.

Perhaps there is some other interaction at work, such as other software running or other issues, I don't know if anyone has done a thorough investigation to determine exactly why some edited tasks fail. Failures happen often enough that MVPs generally recommend that users not edit tasks, but instead create new tasks with their desired options.

OK but it seems to me, because I see that bug on many (all) computers I work with (at least 10 different ones or more) when changig the number of backups. For me it looks like an error in ATI (all versions of ATI, different computers, different systems and so on).

It is just much easier to change the number of backups instead of creating new tasks.

But even if so: why does Acronis not write this in the software or they could make it impossible to change it, and let the user know if this is a well known bug and does not work like it should or users think because the software let you do the change? And later you get full hdds, error messages and so on.

I didn't write the software. I don't work for Acronis. I'm just advising you the safest method.

If you want to complain about the issue, I encourage you to contact Acronis.
