ATI Home 2011 Incrimental Bkup Scheduling problems
2011 Mar 04
I am sitting at my mother-in-law's PC, and am her tech support.
I have for several years been a fan of, and user of, Acronis True Image.
However, I am extremely frustrated with the crippled flexibility inherent
in ATI Home 2011 Update 1 (build 6696).
I have long used physical HDD 'D:' as the backup destination for backing
up the entire drive 'C:'.
I have also typically set the Acronis backup schedule to do an incrimential
backup every two days.
That flexibility in scheduling now appears to be no longer be available!!
When I ran the ATI Home 2011 disc it asked me whether I wished to install
from that disc or from the latest version (online). I chose to install
the latest version.
After the installation, I proceeded to do a new full backup of drive 'C:'.
I now have an earlier full backup from 2010 with 100+ incrimentals added
to it, and the new current full backup of 2011Mar03. I should mention
that the earlier full backup from 2010 has saved me(her) from disaster when
Windows XP failed to boot properly.
I am now struggling to set up a new incrimental backup SCHEDULE based on
the new 2011Mar03 full backup.
From the ATI startup screen, I choose 'Go to Main Screen'. Both the old
2010 and new 2011 full backup file names are shown at the bottom of the
'Home' screen.
Now I click on 'Disk and partition backup', and then click on 'Turn on'
for Scheduling. I then select 'Daily' , 'Start At 2:00 AM' , and check
'Validate at creation' under 'Backup scheme'.
In the 'Destination' field, is shown 'D:\My backups'. I click on the black
'Down Arrow' and choose 'Browse'. I select drive D: and scroll the list of
backup file names to select the new full backup I recently created;
2011mar03.tib .
I then see an error msg 'This file is currently in use by "2011Mar03", and
the OK button is grayed out. I click on 'Cancel' and return to the 'Confi-
gure disk backup process' screen.
I nowhere see anything allowing me to 'select' and-or 'schedule' incrimential
backups of an existing full backup file. At the bottom of this 'Configure..'
screen are buttons labled 'Backup now' which I do not want, and 'Cancel'
which I do not want!! Furthermore, I do not see anything allowing me to
cancel the old schedule incrimentially backing up the 2010 full backup file.
I find the current design of ATI Home 2011 to be extremely limiting as well
as extremely frustrating!!!!!!!!
Please, please, please, return to your earlier and FAR EASIER TO USE screen
design.
At this point, how in the '$&*^T*&%^%&' do I schedule for incrimential backups
of an existing full backup file.
Impatiantly waiting,
William (Bill) McMullen

I have been using ATI for several years; I love ATI 2007-09;
I am beginning to intensely dislike ATI 2011.
1st - Error? I understand you to mean '...error msg 'This file is currently in use by "2011Mar03" ' that I mentioned above.
But I am not finding any incremental bkups built on 2011Mar03.tib . See item 5 below.
2nd - How do I edit the schedule of a task in ATI 2011?
3rd - While I agree that 100+ is not a good thing; I do not live near my M-inlaw, and
I mentioned that I have already used those bkups to (twice) restore her machine.
4th - I mentioned that I am not sure HOW (in ATI 2011) to discontinue the original (2010) bkup schedule.
5th - We are (She is) currently getting two daily bkups; one for Local_disk_(0).tib and one for Local_disk_(C).tib . I do not know how that happened either. I had noticed the Local_disk_(C) as default file name, but I typed in 2011Mar03.
I had tried to create a schedule for incremental bkups to/for full bakup 2011Mar03.tib . Obviously I did not succeed in setting that up correctly either.
Respectfully,
Bill

2011Mar03.tib is a bad name because it ends with number. You can change schedule by clicking on below a "backup up now" button with blue arrow - it's either 'schedule: off *turn on* " or "schedule : *some description*
Is the '2010' backup you mention a task created with true image 2010 before upgrade?
5 - what tasks are listed on the main screen? Does they correspons to the archives you get? If there are some spurious tasks, you can check for (and get rid of them) by a command-line utility http://kb.acronis.com/content/1859 .

Dev - Anon: Tks, I appreciate your help.
As you could discern, some times I have been abbreviating (have been concise).
My personal file naming convention in ATI has been y-m-d + 24hr time + computer or personal ID + drive letter (ie: drv C , or C drv). In my own home system I also bkup drives additional to drv C.
I do not recall the ATI ver that was used to create mom's 2010 bkup; At her location, I could not find the original ATI disc , so I purchased and installed ATI 2011 not anticipating the screen(s) design would be so radically changed. (On my own home system, I have yet to install ATI 2011.
I believe I am still using ATI 2009.)
On the ATI Main Screen, 1st (at the bottom) is the oldest full bkup file (name) of '2010 --- C drv.tib' . To the right is 'Recover Last Version' with a green down-arrow. Below that is (blue) 'Explore All Versions'. At far right is (blue) 'Operations' with blue down-arrow. When I click on 'Open Bkup Location' windows explorer opens with '2010 --- 103.tib' highlighted, even though --104.tib and --105.tib are listed.
2nd, above '2010 --- C drv.tib' is the next full bkup file (name) of '2011Mar03 --- C drv.tib' .
To the right is 'Recover' with a green down-arrow. Below that is (blue) 'Explore and Recover'.
At far right is (blue) 'Operations' with a blue down-arrow. When I click on 'Open Bkup Location'
windows explorer opens with '2011Mar03 --- C drv.tib' highlighted (it seems there are no
incremental bkup files to/for this full bkup.
FWIW I have found it best to close win explorer each time before the next 'Open Bkup Location'
in order to achieve the correct file 'highlight' each time.
3rd, above '2011Mar03 --- C drv.tib' is the next full bkup file (name) of '2011Mar04 --- C drv.tib' .
To the right is 'Recover Last Version' with a green down-arrow. Below that is 'Updated: Today at
2:00 AM' , and below that is (blue) 'Explore All Versions'. At far right is 'Backup Now' with a green
up-arrow. Below that is 'Schedule: (blue) Daily at 2:00 AM'. Below that is (blue) 'Operations' with
a blue down-arrow. When I click on 'Open Bkup Location' windows explorer opens with
'Local_Disk_(0)4.tib' highlighted. WTH !! ATI knows the full bkup file to which it is scheduled to
add the incremental bkups. Why does it not incorporate the correct file name??? Damn!!
When I right click and choose 'Edit Bkup Settings' , the 'Bkup Name:', near bottom of screen, is
shown correctly as '2011Mar04 --- C drv.tib' . Why are the incremental bkups being created as
'Local_Disk_(0)--.tib' ?? Where did I go wrong in creating this bkup schedule?
It still bothers the beejeebers out of me that I do not see the term 'Incremental' anywhere in the schedule setup screens. Yes, I believe I understand the term 'Version Chain'. Still, I would prefer that procedures be spelled out and items be individually selectable.
HEY! I just discovered 'Disk Bkup Options' where I may choose 'Custom Scheme' and then select 'Incremental Bkup' , etc. Hooray!! Maybe this is what I have been looking for. Back to this later.
The 'Local_disk_(C).tib' seems to have stopped at --2.tib on 3/4/2011, while the 'Local_Disk_(0).tib' is up to --4.tib on 3/8/2011, and the '2010 --- C drv.tib' is up to --105.tib on 3/8/2011.
It bothers me that one needs to use a cmd line approach. I remember only enough DOS to be
dangerous. There should be a 'Stop / Delete Existing Schedule' option available.
I do not think I may successfully use 'Edit Bkup Settings' to correct the file name of the incremental bkup structure for '2011Mar04 --- C drv.tib' .
If I can successfully delete the three existing schedules (must I use the cmd line approach ?) ,
then I should be able to safely delete the existing bkup files through/using windows explorer.
After stopping the three current bkup schedules and before deleting existing bkup files, I will
attempt - using the 'Custom Scheme' procedure (above) - to create a new incremental bkup
schedule for '2011Mar04 --- C drv.tib'
Assuming I will be successful, using the 'Custom Scheme' approach, in creating a new incremental bkup schedule based on '2011Mar04 --- C drv.tib' , everything now hinges on my being able to successfully STOP the three existing bkup schedules!! Again, is the cmd line approach the Only / Best way to do this?
Respectfully,
Bill
