ATI2011 - recovery-error: "not enough space on the recovery destination drive" on an new big hard disc

- Accedi per poter commentare

Yes, the destination machine is a Dell Desktop.
The trial version of ABR10 did not complain about the size of the
partition and did what it thought was a successful restore. This
restored machine could not boot but I guess that is because the
trial version doesn't include Universal Restore.
I didn't notice an option to select if I wanted the restore to be
sector-by-sector. What can I assume about how it was done?
Is it safe to assume that this will work if I buy ABR10 with the
Universal Restore option?
I hate to do it having already bought ATH2011 for this purpose
but my back is against the wall.

Maybe you should look outside the Acronis "box."

One of my earlier posts (#28) included a request for
an alternate product that can do a Bare Metal Restore.
I have not found one. Do you have one to suggest?

Arbalest,
Sector by sector imaging won't make any difference in your case, as Windows will still know it is on a different system and sulk.
Dell machines are problematical. I wonder if like some Lenovo's they use a different head configuration which is confusing TIH.
I think we've already covered the possibility of card readers internal or external causing the problem, and as you don't have a laptop the docking station software is unlikely to be causing you problem.
As far as ABR10 is concerned, why not email the Pre Sales department explain your problem and why you are thinking of getting ABR10, they may be able to come up with a solution for you bearing in mind you have TIH2011 which is not working for you.
Double check with them that if you go ahead with ABR10 and Universal Restore and there is still a problem, you would still be able to ask for a refund on the ABR10.

Hello. I had the same problem and thanks to Yves Deroual it's now solved. TI 2010 successfully restored my partition in sector by sector mode from a backup created with TI 2011.

First the question - why in some instances of restoring XP Pro to a target machine it NOT need activation and when restoring a different instance of XP Pro to the SAME machine it DOES require activation? What is XP looking at to determine if it needs activation?
I have paid Acronis $10 (plus) tax to be able to downgrade to ATH2010 and Plus Pack (Universal Restore) 2010. Here are the results:
When restoring, I get the same error message (... maybe not enough...) but instead of an OK button I get something like Proceed/Cancel buttons and a check box to disable this error in the future. Then, as it should, the restore can proceed.
On the downside, when the restore is done XP wants to be activated. On the other hand, the image I have taken from a different machine can still be restored to the same target machine and XP does NOT require activation.
Now, if I could skip this activation I would be set. Given that I haven't figured that out I have been trying to deal with Microsoft. So far I have been transferred around until the call gets dropped. But I will try a third time shortly. I'm just hoping there is a way to avoid this last step. That was the whole point of Universal Restore, as far as I'm concerned.

I think the activation difference depends on the current activation state of the source system. Windows keeps track of certain hardware changes. When enough changes have been made, it triggers a reactivation. If you take a newly activated system and move it to new hardware it is less likely to need activated than a old system that had the hard drive and video card replaced after it was activated. -- Please note that this is just my observation of how it works. There are other things that can trigger it too. I've seen reinstalling controller drivers trigger it and also Windows redetecting an existing drive. I think this is because it thinks a change took place when it actually didn't.
UR does nothing to avoid or bypass Windows activation.

Hi,
Acronis has released a new build of TIH 2011 (Build 6696)..
With this build I have restored an image of my active partition where there is no more than 2% free space. TIH 2011 has not showed a warning about insufficient free space before starting restore process.

Interesting. Just last week as Acronis' customer service was charging me for a downgrade to ATH2010 to get around this and the rep was asking me to take a photograph of the screen showing the error message and send it to them as an email attachment (since Windows isn't running you can't take a normal screen grab).
At no point did they acknowledge here (maybe elsewhere) that it is a known problem and that a fix was on the way.

I have exactly the same problem with Build 6597. I have upgraded to the latest Build 6857, and have loaded up ATIH with a bootable USB. When I tried to recover a backup image, it stops with an error message saying "Recover operation failed". I lost my primary partition! I am still waiting on a reply from tech support. ATIH 2011 is just a waste of money and time.

I have found a sollution!
This problem does not appear in 2010 version, so install it and your backup will recover just fine.
I think that if you own 2011 version you are even more than entitled to download 2010 torrent to save something which is supposed to work in the first place.
