ATI2011 trial version can't see my drive...

Thread needs solution

Some background - the 200 MB hard disk on my my PC running Windows XP has failed. I have a full backup image taken a few months ago, using True Image 9.0, onto a USB external hard disk.

I have ordered a replacement disk, which will be 250MB (when it arrives...) meanwhile I am preparing to restore from the backup.

I have downloaded the trial version of ATI2011, on another PC, and created a bootable CD. I understand from this website that 2011 may be better able to handle the difference in hard disk sizes, while still being able to read the old backup .tib files.

When I boot up the failed PC using the 2011 CD, it tells me there are no drives available. I have tried the "acpi=off noapic" fix, but it makes no difference. However, when I boot up the failed PC using the True Image 9.0 bootable CD, it finds the USB hard disk and the CD drives, no problem...

So, what do I do?

Will True Image 9.0 allow me to restore my backup onto a bigger hard disk?

If I register and pay for ATI2011, is there some fix which will let me see my drives?

Any advice, please?

Not sure if ati2011 will handle tibs made with a version as old as 9. I've tested ati2009 bootcd on ati10 tibs and that combo is fine, but I haven't tried versions farther apart than that. I believe ati2011 will not recognize ati10 tibs -- I recall trying this and having to change to a diff bootcd

Words to the wise. Before you begin to rely on backup files you must ensure that you can resotre, including making a bootCd and setting up a restore to make sure it can see your drives. Failing that, you can login to acronis.com and go to your registrered products and download the bootcd iso. This should have a bit diff drivers and might work on your machine.

If you can restore with ati9, when you restore, do your restore as a partition and set the size of the partition manually. Alternative is to do the restore and then load ati and create a Secure Zone, then uncreate it, at which point you can tell it how much space to allocate to the other partition. You can collect all the unused space that way too.

Thanks for your reply - I have restored from ATI 9.0 many times before, after disk errors, but always on the same PC and hard disk... it's the new ATI2011 which can't find the drives!

There's this chart which says old archives work with new versions:

I hope they're right!

I'll try the partition trick...

If you are registered for ati2011, you can try logging into acronis.com, going to your registered products and downloading the iso for the bootCD. This uyou can burn to CD and that bootcd will have some diff drivers than the bootcd you make with ati in windows. And sometimes these will work were others won't. If that CD doens't work, you can contact support, they'll ask for some you to collect some system info, and they'll probably be able to find you an iso that makes a usable bootcd.

There's so much hardware out there for PCs, since it's basically an open system, that it's hard for any of the backup/imaging programs from any of the manufacturers to not have problems on some setups.

Read Grover's guide on restoring with partition resize here http://www.wilderssecurity.com/supportfiles/gh_acronis_partition_resize…
