ATIH 2012 Build#6131 and Flash Drive Issues.

Thread needs solution

Hi,

I wanted to start this new thread perhaps for others who had issues with ATIH 2012 maybe not playing well with their flash drive. In another post it was recommended to install these new drivers as a temporary fix: http://kb.acronis.com/content/26062 well they worked for me when I had build #5545.

I went through hell and back to get the new build #6131 installed but it had the same issues with my flash drive #5545 had before the driver updates.

I tired installing the updated drivers with build #6131, which installed fine, and promptly rebooted to a BSOD.

Anyone out there having this or similar problems? Acronis is there any plans to update those drivers or make a fix for this? The flash drive problem has been going on for MONTHS at least.

Thanks for any help!

Hi,

Thanks Ed B for pointing out the "Known Issue" of the release of build #6131. And that is "Acronis True Image Home 2012 may prevent a USB flash drive from being properly detected under Windows. A fix will be available soon." as noted in http://kb.acronis.com/content/26062. However the drivers in this KB article are not compatible with build #6131 so do not use them if you update.

We will wait for the: "A fix will be available soon." I will post it here when it is released.

Thanks,

This USB problem has been a very diabolical Catch-22 one for me. Unfortunately, I was already using Build 6131 and had to reinstall ATI 2012 due to some instability issues. Did a "clean" uninstall including using the ATIH_CleanUp_2012 utility and reinstalled. I am now stuck with either no USB capability, or not being able to boot if I uninstall 2012 to try to roll back to ATI 2011. Even if I wanted to totally get rid of ATI (as many frustrated users have said in other posts concerning this problem), I don't seem to be able to without reinstalling Win 7. After several decades of computing, I don't remember any vendor doing such a thing to me (guess I've been lucky). Enough with the whining, I wait with baited breath for the alluded to, "A fix will be available soon." Not fun having no USB cabability in today's world.

I don't have a problem with applying patches since I am a developer myself but the use of USB thumb drives are not exactly rare so I would expect to see a patch or a workaround that actually works real soon.

IMHO you need a new set of beta testers. I would be happy to help since am currently paying for the privledge of doing so anyway.

I recently upgraded from ATI Home 2011 to 2012 (Installed over the last).

DataTraveler 4GB USB flash drive is no longer recognized by Windows.
Windows asks "This drive needs to be formatted, do you want to format it now?".
Good thing I am smart enough to answer NO!
The flash drive works in WinXP on another computer.

Since I do all of my backups and restores from the Acronis Bootable CD, it would be great if we could disable the USB stuff from this program. I am more likely to backup to my other internal hard disk and then copy to the USB drive or network drive later then to directly backup to the USB drive.

Try to disable the NOn Stop Backup service to see if that solves your issue.

I tried it and it worked.
I went into Services and disabled the Acronis Non Stop Backup service, and then stopped the service.
Now the 4G DataTraveler USB flash drive works.

I tried disabling the ATI Nonstop Backup Service and rebooted. Alas, my USB devices still don't work. It's interesting how solutions work for some and not others. Must be because of different USB controllers. The wait continues...

I tried to install TI2012 for a second time, after getting a clean uninstall using the cleanup utility. I was encouraged when build 6131 installed cleanly.

However, immediately upon rebooting all the USB drives in my system became unusable because Windows could not load the drivers.

Upon inspecting the drivers for these devices, I found these were loaded:
disk.sys
partmgr.sys
vsflt58.sys
vsflt61.sys

Prior to 6131, vsflt61.sys was not used. I suspect a problem either with that driver, or the fact that there are two vsflt drivers loaded. In any event, to restore my confidence in backup/recovery, I restored from a backup I took before attempting the update, uninstalled TI2012 with the cleanup utility, and reinstalled TI2010, which has never failed me in the past.

Are you sure that both drivers (vsflt58.sys and vsflt61.sys) for the Acronis Disk Storage Filter service are actually being loaded, Tom? Just because both driver files are present in the \Windows\System32\Drivers\ folder does not necesarily mean that both are actuallly being used. Do you see both of them listed for DiskDrive devices in the Windows OS Device Manager under driver details?

If so, that is definitely a problem that would need to be corrected. However, non-recognition of some USB-connected storage devices may still be a problem with ATIH 2012 build 6131 even if only the correct vsflt61.sys driver is loaded.

Yes, the devices I listed came directly from Device Manager > Properties > Driver > Driver Details

Okay then. That definitely does need fixing. Unfortunately, although it may be worth a try, a normal uninstall/reinstall or "repair" of the TIH 2012 application is unlikely to do it for you. You'll probably need to uninstall and then run the Acronis "cleanup" tool ( http://kb.acronis.com/content/24545 ) as well before reinstalling. It's risky as others have reported "blue screen" death traps at various points in that cleanup process. So make sure that you have a validated full system backup and a fully tested bootable "rescue" disc in case you need to revert.

If that fails, there are other "cures" that involve manual editing of the registry, but they're also risky if any mistake is made.

Already tried the uninstall with the cleanup utility. It did not remove the drivers being loaded. This is my second attempt at getting 2012 updated. The first was a twelve-hour event. For now, I'm sticking with 2010. Thanks for the interest and advice.

I've tried uninstalling with the ATIH_CleanUp_2012 utility and Revo Uninstaller in Hunter mode... still ended up not being able to boot. For chuckles, I also rebuilt the MBR and Boot.ini... unsuccessful. Had to recover an image. Unfortunately, I don't have a backup before Build 6131.

After looking at the very, very, very long list of known issues for Build 6131, I have to agree with marty56. It seems that we users are being made the beta testers. Very dissappointing...

Given that the statement "a fix will be available soon" may not be until after the holidays, any other ideas to try? Thanks ahead of time...

If you go to Device Manager and list the driver details for one of your non-functioning USB drives, do you see the two vsfltxx.sys drivers I mention above? If so, you may have the same problem as I. If I were sticking to this, my next attempt would have been to rename vsflt58.sys to ~vsflt58.sys and reboot to see if it is in fact a driver conflict with vsflt61.sys.

If they still don't operate, I'd check to be sure the renaming had the desired effect namely, not being able to find it and thus not loading it. If it still shows vsflt58.sys, I think I'd be out of ideas. BTW... I also tried the hotfix but it did not help.

Good luck

@Rojo: Any other ideas to try for what? Are you trying to get rid of it? Repair it? Reinstall it? Revert to a previous version? Something else? The current ATIH 2012 release's flash drive handling issues are what they are and only Acronis can fix 'em if even they can. Installed configuration errors, on the other hand, are something else altogether.

In any case, it's very difficult to be helpful when neither the end objective nor the current situation is entirely clear. Sounds like you've been changing several things manually yourself, almost at random, so that any well-intended but wrong suggestion at this point could land you in more problems than you've already got.

Thanks Richard for your response. As you say, the "fix" will have to come from Acronis. Until then, I need to uninstall ATIH 2012.
After reading your other posts elsewhere in this forum, you are definitely one of the most knowledgeable people on the inner workings of ATI. Specifically, Thread 27907 talks about the need to remove items in the correct order to avoid the infamous BSOD.
With the objective stated of uninstalling, I run Win 7 (x64) Ultimate and ATIH 2012 Build 6131. ATI was working OK until I upgraded to 6163 and had problems. I decided to do a clean uninstall and reinstall (obviously unenlightened). That is when I noticed the USB problem.
I've been using a Cruzer USB flash drive for testing. The driver details under the device manager are:
- disk.sys - PnP Disk Driver
- fltsrv.sys - Acronis Storage Filter Management Driver
- partmgr.sys - Partition Management Driver
- vsflt63.sys - Acronis Vitual Disk Storage Filter
I also see vsflt58.sys and vsflt61.sys in C:\Windows\System32\drivers and tried renaming them just in case as suggested by Tom above (thanks by the way).
I wouldn't be working on this now, but I have a new Garmin GPS and am going on a family trip momentarily. The interface to load waypoints is USB.
Thanks again for the help to us newbies. It is appreciated... Ron

Well, the main part of the problem is the device class filters that Acronis leaves behind in the registry. If you can get rid of them your USB storage device handling should be back to normal. See my posts at http://forum.acronis.com/forum/27907 for complete details.
