back up file is locked - can not delete

Thread needs solution

version 2012
with windows 7 home prem

Was attempting to image a new hard drive.
Installed new West Digital in my desktop.
Inserted and ran the Acronis CD
Connected my back up drive (which holds the image).

Started the process and toooo many hours later no success.

What I soon discovered was that the Image was saved as a C Drive file (and has a locked icon on folder icon) ON THE backup drive - NOT the new hard drive.

So 2 issues:
1. how to delete the new C Drive back up files - when I try to delete I get a admin error- but I am the admin!

2. How to successfully image the new drive.

2 attachments ( of the back up folder with the lock icon I spoke of & 2nd is of the error msg).

I do not understand what you did or what you want to do.

You inserted a new drive into your PC. Was this to replace your system drive, or is it an additional drive for data?

What drive did you try to backup, and to what drive?

As for deleting files that Windows won't allow, that's because Windows sees that you don't have permission to delete and you are not the owner of those files. Change the ownership to your user account, and you'll be able to delete.

Intent was to replace a hard drive that has failed.
So, yes a new CDrive (a western digital) installed.

The back up drive (a Seagate) has various back up images on it. With a SATA Adapter kit, I connected the Seagate to the PC
So when the Acronis Recovery screen popped up, I chose the imaged file.
But some how instead of imaging to the new West. Dig. drive , it saved it on the Seagate!

I am trying this again- but this time I used my Windows upgrade DVD & successfully installed Win 7.
Then I installed Acronis on that PC.
Then with the SATA adapter connected the Seagate and I am trying this again as I type this (which is upstairs. The PC in question is down stairs).

So hopefully this attempt will work.

Going back to the other problem - how do I Change the ownership to your user account, and you'll be able to delete?

you need to be logged in as an administrator
right click on the folder with the icon
choose properties
go to the security tab
choose advanced (lower right)
go to the owner tab
click on edit
enter the new owner "Administrators", click on OK, etc. until you close the properties windows.

You should be able to delete

Well success with the image- wonder if installing Windows the reason.

But still NOT able to delete the folder.
Tried your suggestion three times too.

LockHunter (http://lockhunter.com/) is is excellent application (and free) to see what is locking the files/folders and can unlock and delete them also.

Success with the locked folder - but now how you think.

First moved what I wanted to save on another drive.

Then formatted the Seagate drive (with the locked folder).
then moved those files/folders back to the Seagate drive (and yes that locked folder is gone).

That's using a sledgehammer to kill a flea, but as long as it's now as you want it then okay.

Love the analogy.
I was getting a bit frustrated with the permissions process.
And looks like I missed the Lock Hunter tip when I posted - will keep the link for future.
