backing up to external USB drive creates multiple backup files

Thread needs solution

Using Acronis True Image Home 2011 on a Win 7 64-bit OS. When I back up to an external USB connected hard drive, I get a backup of 11 files with a maximum of 4 GB per file. Checking my Disk backup Options, specifically backup splitting, I've set it to Custom 75 GB or 1 TB....yet my backup files are no larger than 4 GB.....all 11 of them. When I backup to a secondary drive within the computer, it will backup to 1 file as desired. Why can't I backup to an external USB drive using 1 file vs 11 files in the backup? Is this a new limitation for external USB connected hard drives? How can I create 1 large backup file as desired? Thanks.

Check the file system on the external storage drive. It needs to be NTFS.

If Fat32 is the file system, the 4G limit has that limitation.

If you need to convert to NTFS, try doing a google search for explanations on how to do that without losing your data.

Grover,
You guessed correctly, the external USB drive is FAT 32. I wasn't aware of that limitation. Thanks for the help.
