Backing up to older versions

Thread needs solution

Need instructions on how to use Acronis 2013 to back up to backups made by Acronis2010. I've added the OLD backup to the LIST, but there is no "BACKUP" button. I'm running a validation on the old backup as I write this, hoping that will help.

Thanks,

Ron

Ron,

You need to make a complete new archive, the 2010 archives can be recovered but it is not advisable to continue making images to them.

To make an image to them you would need to make a new task and point it to the first full image of the 2010 archive. This is not recommended.

Ron,
Look at item #2 below for more information about creating backup tasks using 2013 which is totally different than prior versions.

I don't think it's necessary to make a new image. I found an option under the "gear icon" in the backup & recovery tab called, "recreate backup settings". Apparently, it is designed to continue using backups made by older versions of Acronis TI.

From the 2013 Help File
"Recreate backup settings (available only for backups manually added to the backup list) - allows configuring the settings for image, file, and e-mail backups created by a previous Acronis True Image Home version. This item may also appear for backups created on another computer and added to the backup list without importing their settings.
Without backup settings, you will be unable to perform certain operations. Specifically, you cannot refresh the backup by clicking Back up now. Also, you cannot edit and clone the backup settings and schedule".

This would seem to be the correct way to design the software. If every time a new version of the software came out a customer needed to create a full backup using the new software, I doubt there would be many customers left.

If the backup validates, why should I bother making a fresh 2 day long full image?

To amplify what others MVP have indicated, you should start new chains when you change versions. This way, you will have a clear idea of which backup has been backed up with which version. You would keep your Acronis 2010 recovery CD as long as you keep the backups created by that version. ATI is generally great with backward compatibility, but is also known to be sensitive to versions. Some MVPs even add the build number to the backup name and create a new recovery media with each new build...
