Backup Converts Files into Empty Folders
Hi - I've been using True Image since version 2011 (now on 2014) and have spotted this occasionally, but more recently a lot. Sometimes the software will turn a file into a folder with no contents. i.e. if I have a file called 'image.jpg', it will be replaced by an empty folder called 'image.jpg'.
It appears that the original file information is lost during this 'conversion', so the very software I've bought to protect against loss of files actually appears to be responsible for losing them!
Please help as I now have a lot (possibly 100s) of missing files.
I'm running Windows 8, but I'm pretty sure this also happened on Windows 7. The backup is set to copy specific locations from my laptop to a NAS drive on a schedule.

Yes, in addition to what Les has asked, I am curious as to the date and time of the newly created folders. Does the folder time creation match that time periiod when the backup is being created?

Hi - this is nothing to do with restoring. It actually changes the original files. I always thought it was Ture Image doing this, but wasn't 100%, but I caught it out when I added a new folder to the backup and the time stamp on the files converted to folders was the same time as when the backup ran. See the attached.
I haven't checked the backup file to see if the originals are there, I'll do that this weekend. However, I have lots of folders, so manually restoring affected files could take a very very long time (assuming the originals are intact in the backup).

I'm confused, though, as to how you determined that it was Acronis that is causing this.

Ok - turns out this is not True Image doing this, although it is making things worse. I have a sync setup so local files sync to my NAS drive (Actually a USB drive plugged into a router). However, the OS on the router controlling the drive is buggy and is causing these files to change to folders. Unfortunately, Sync is then seeing these as a file update and syncing back to the local drive, deleting the original local file in the process. At least, I'm pretty sure this is what is happening. See this page for more info on this router bug:

I've reformated the NAS drive and started from scratch as well as trying to recover as many of the lost files as possible. Everything seems to be running smoother now but I'll post back if I get any more issues.
Apologies for jumping the gun on this.
