Backup does not finish

Thread needs solution

Hi,
I've been running TI 11.0 home successfully for some time, but now I can't make a backup in Vista 64-bit.

I recently got a new machine and want to make backups for it. I was able to install TI and copy my files over to the new PC. It looked like it was working fine.

But what I soon discovered is that I can't make a backup.

I installed TI 11.0 build 8101, but it didn't help. I'm able to create a scheduled backup, and it activates at the proper time. But no matter how long I let it run, the backup never gets past 2%. The same thing happens if I try to manually start a backup.

I'm trying to copy a partitioned drive to an external USB 2 drive on Vista Home Premium (build 6001) SP1 (64-bit).

Any idea what I need to do to get it to make a backup?
Thanks

I've experimented some more, and this is what I've discovered:

1) If I do a whole volume backup, the procedure seems to work properly. A backup of the volume is created. Yea!

2) If I create a backup of files only (I back up my data directories daily), this is where the problem occurs.
a) The scheduled backup (or manual backup) starts as expected.
b) The backup process just stalls. System tray icon is animated, the operation progress window shows an expected time to completion, and thermometer progress bars may or may not be filled in (they are currently not filled in). The main TI window shows 'operation in progress 1%' in the lower right corner. And then nothing -- it stays in the position perpetually.
c) If I try to cancel via the system tray, I get the cancel icon, but the operation progress and main windows show no change. If I try to cancel by the operation progress window, the cancel button greys out, but the window does not disappear. If I hide the operation progress window, the main window still shows the 'operation in progress 1%' with an animated icon in the lower right corner.
d) If I totally quit out of TI next, then relaunch, it still shows a task running (progress 1%). It's a Zombie backup that never completes and can't be killed! I have to reboot the computer to get it to quit showing that the task is in progress.

Terry, I'm starting to get a handle on this problem. I've been working on it on and off for 3 weeks.

A good workaround I found is to create a whole volume (hard drive or partition) backup. I'm not having trouble with that.

Other discoveries:

The problem only occurs on data backups. As I said, whole volume is OK.

The percentage of progress is always the same for me, but it's dependent on the size of the backup I'm making. If I make a tiny test backup, it will get 95% finished and stall. If I'm doing 130GB, it only gets 1 or 2% before stalling.

I have 3 discs: an external, and an internal that's partitioned in two (C: and J: ). The problem only occurs when I try to copy from the partitioned internal to the external. Note: this is the same physical external HD I used with the Acronis software on Win XP. The problem started happening when I got a new PC with Vista.

If I make test data backups from the external to either of the internal partitions, it backs up fine!

If I make test data backups from one internal partition to the other internal partition, it works fine! This works both directions: C drive to J drive, and J drive to C drive.

Unfortunately, what doesn't work is what I need: from the internal partitions to the external backup drive.

I've tried to resolve the problem with suggestions Dmitry gave in this post. Unfortunately it didn't help, and I have yet to contact tech support.

I'm wondering if it's my partitioning software that's to blame. I used Partition Wizard Business Edition 4.1 to create the partition. Did you by any chance use the same?
