Backup Failure

Thread needs solution

I am trying to backup to locally attached hard disk. Getting the following error:
----------------------
Failed to back up file or folder 'xxx'.

I have 48GB RAM and 800GB free HDD space. I am trying to do a file and folder backup - not complete system.

Any pointers would be much appreciated...

Thanks

Hello jg77,

Thank you for posting and welcome to the forum.

I would really appreciate if you could do the following to localize the issue.

1. Create a partition backup and let us know if there are any errors.

2. Create a file backup for a smaller amount of files, for example, if you initially backed up 30 000 files, create a task to backup 10 000 files.

3. Please attach the system report to your post.

Looking forward to your reply and if you have additional questions please let me know.

Thank you.

I too am having the same problem with True Image 2013. Trying to do a local backup to a USB 1.5tb drive. Fails immediately with error:

Error occured while backing up. (0x40019)
Tag=0xCE542E14DA203B82Error occured while opening the file. (0x40007)

The original attempt was with 50,000+ files, 4,600+ folders, about 845gb

All attempts failed including 1,696 files, 146 folders, about 371gb

I was successful with 4,888 files, 157 folders, 6.5gb

I don't get it. Probably large amount of data causing the failure, but that's why I'm backing up.

I need to do a file and folder backup, not an image.

Any solution? I've experienced the same problem with Windows XP and Windows 7 and True Image 2013.

I've seen this problem while googling with no answer. There is more discussion of this problem when backing up network drive. THESE ARE LOCAL DRIVES, like the originator of this thread.

TIA

RJ B,

The backup errors you are reporting are not the same as in the first post. The general error (0x40019) denotes a problem, but the specific errors follow the general error in the log. You are receiving error (0x40007), which is not mentioned in the first post, and relates to Acronis not being able to open a file/folder. This could be either on the target or the source since we do not have anything else to go on except the small amount of information you have posted about the error. Assuming it is on the source, you may have some file system corruption that is not allowing Acronis access to the files/folders.

If you can post the complete log of the failed task, it may provide more insight to the problem.

If you have not run a chkdsk on your source and destination drives, try that first. In Windows 7 open an elevated command prompt (Run as administrator) and issue the command "chkdsk X: /r" without the quotes and substituting "X" with the source drive and then again with the destination drive letter. This will take some time to complete. Try the backup again after your check both the source and destination drives.

James

James,

Thanks for your response. Let me give you more complete information. The computer I'm working with is an older Compaq Presario SR5404F that I use as a server (Ubuntu 10.04 Server). The pc has a single 1.5 tb drive partitioned into many partitions (3 OS's - Windows XP, Ubuntu 10.04 Server and Ubuntu 10.04, that can also give direct access to the data in either windows or linux). The rest is multiple NTFS partitions mostly for data storage. Two of the NTFS partitions have single files that are encrypted Truecrypt drives. One is 150 gb, the other is 750 gb (both base 2). I have been able to to do an Acronis File and Folder backup of the unencrypted 150 gb drive (33,782 items, totalling 148.4 GB). It is the 750 gb drive (55,992 items, totalling 606.8 GB) I'm have the trouble backing up.

Upon your recommendation, I have run chkdks /r on the Windows XP OS drive, the encrypted Truecrypt 750 gb drive and the unencrypted Truecrypt 750 gb drive I ran chkdsk /f (I started /r but it apparently would take days to complete) the target drive (an external USB 2.0 2tb NTFS drive).

After running chkdsk on all of the used drives I got the same error, which I will attach as a screenshot jpg.

Any help would be appreciated, as this is very frustrating, as I thought I would have no problems using TI2013. As luck goes, all the backups went perfectly until the last and longest.

TIA

James,

I forgot to ask:

What is the \\?\ in the filename line of the error jpg. The path given is a folder.

RJ B

RJ B,

This still points to an issue that Acronis can not open the file/folder to back it up.

As a simple test, create a file/folder backup task, and only select the folder referenced in your post, and run the task.
Also create another file/folder backup task, and select another folder on the same drive to compare your results.
You could attach the logs from each backup to a post with your results.

I have no idea why the \\?\ is in the name.

James

Please take a look at this KB article: http://kb.acronis.com/content/21636
This is referencing Acronis Backup and Recovery v11, but has similar errors generated.
This error shows to be related to access problems with the target not the source, as I would have thought.

Are you running the task using the scheduler, or manually, or both?

James

James,

Thanks for the quick reply.

I will have time later today to try your recommendations and will let you know the results.

Re: scheduled or manual or both - MANUAL ONLY

Re: http://kb.acronis.com/content/21636 - did you notice they also had the \\?\ in their filename.

RJ B

James,

Once again thanks for your help and sorry for the delay in responding.

The problem has been solved. I completed the full File and Folder backup of the 750 gb Truecrypt encrypted drive in question (55,992 items, totaling 606.8 GB,base 2).

The folder that was articulated in the error message to my dismay had a trailing space in it's name ("Jesse Collin Young "). The folder could not be renamed or deleted. I copied the data from the bad folder to a newly created folder. I then had to use the "Unlocker" utility, to delete the problem folder. Once I had done that I felt confident that a backup would run and complete. So rather than run the tests you recommended I recreated the full File and Folder backup of the encrypted drive. The backup took zz hours to complete, but completed without errors.

I'm still not quite sure why a trailing space in a ntfs filename would cause a backup to fail. I would have preferred TI to tell me the file was screwed up and will be bypassed during the backup. In any case, is there a simple explanation for why a trailing space in a ntfs filename would halt the backup. The other amazing thing about the folder in question is that it is probably a third of the way into the data (acknowledging that ntfs data is stored where it wants, not in the order I see them) and yet the backup crashed within 30 seconds of starting, with the ti.jpg error I sent. But during the backup process it took about 8 hours to get to that folder during the successful backup.

I'm glad to have this solved, but am left with questions of why something as innocuous as a trailing space can reek such havoc. Oh, and finding a trailing space itself is a fun endeavor. or just plane luck.

I must again thank you for pointing me in the right direction, I wondering if \\?\ has something to do with the trailing space or is an entirely separate issue.

Thanks James, I can now do reliable backups of all my data and OS's. My only disappointment is the amount of time it takes to backup this amount of data. I have enough patience and other pc's to use, but my server now must be down for over a day, when backups and required. I guess if I were more sophisticated I be using a form of hot swappable RAID, as I still prefer to have my backups off site. Any thoughts, comments or suggestions re: this, I'd be interested in what you would recommend.

But again, problem solved, thanks,

RJ B

James,

I sent the last message prematurely, before completion of the backup, it's been running for about 20 hours to date and should complete in a few hours. If any errors occur I'll let you know. Otherwise, thanks again.

RJ B

You can not create a folder or file with a trailing space from within Windows or from a command prompt. What ever created the folder, created it with an invalid folder name.

There is no such folder "C:\Users\Alan\Documents\" and its not on the list of folders to be backed up in the CONFIGURE FILE BACKUP PROCESS.
What's going on?
