Backup to FTP destination with Acronis True Image Home 2011

Thread needs solution

Hallo,

after having no success to make a backup over FTP to my NAS with windows 7 and Acronis True Image Home 2012, I tried it with on my old notebook with windows xp sp3 and Acronis True Image Home 2011 latest build. The FTP connection test is here successfull (on windows 7 not), but after confirming connection I could not choose my folder under the top FTP level path: ftp://ix2-200-dc386f/pools/A/A0/Backups. ATI2011 allways sets the destination to ftp://ix2-200-dc386f:21/without following path. If I put the whole path into the filename file, I got an error message from TI2011. On my NAS runs a ProFTPd server, which was tested by Acronis as the wrote in their knowledge base. In windows explorer I have full access to all folder below top level of ftp://ix2-200-dc386f/, but TI2011 didn't show them in TI browser window.

Has anybody an idea, why FTP in this case don't work?

I'd say you are hitting some access rights issue.

Hallo Pat L,

can you explain more detailed? I have on windows 7 a user "username" and "password-A". On NAS I have a user "Username" (it differs only in capital letter at the beginning" and "password-B" (which is different from windows). If I try to connect with Acronis True Image FTP I use the username from my NAS accont and not from windows. On NAS user "Username" has full access to all shares (read/write) and also to FTP root directory \. Below \ is located folder "pools", under this "A" and third level "A0". Under "\pools\A\A0" I can see (with console FTP or FileZilla Client) all shared folders from my NAS.

I also removed all relevant informations from windows 7 tresor and created the register information in tresor new, but I can't connect to NAS FTP with True Image 2012. I also reinstalled again the network device drivers and norton internet security 2012. I deleted arp cache, but nothing helps. I restored factory settings of my router, also no success to connect to NAS FTP with TI.

I checked the access rights on my NAS for top level ftp folder:
drwxr-xr-x 6 root root 120 Jan 7 17:34 mnt
Below /mnt there is a folder "pools" with following rights:
drwxr-xr-x 3 nobody users 60 Jan 6 13:33 pools

FTP user, with which I connect is member of group "users" from NAS OS. Does True Image in some other way than other FTP programs check in anyway the access rights?

In 2011, you should be able to:
- enter the FTP full path, username and password to connect to the FTP server. Can you do this? It seems that you do
- in the FTP server see the available shares in ATI. Can you do this? If you can't see the possible destinations under the FTP server, you won't be able to go further. The only reason why you couldn't should be access issues. I have re-read your previous post and cannot find any obvious issue though...
- select one of the shares as the destination. Can you do this?

Also, make sure you don't have any mapped drives to the destinations.

I am guessing you have already reviewed this http://kb.acronis.com/content/23496 and this http://kb.acronis.com/content/13510 in detail.

Hallo Pat L,

normally I use ATI 2012 for backup and recovery on win7-x64 os. I have created an own post in Acronis True Image Home 2012 Forum with same problem with FTP (28268: "FTP connection test to NAS ProFTPd fails") , but in TI 2012 already the connection test to FTP path did not go on. I made a system dump from my NAS and can see, there is a log entry for proftpd like this "Jan 9 09:02:04 ix2-200-DC386F proftpd: pam_unix(ftp:session): session opened for user Helmut by (uid=0)" after testing FTP connection with TI. Normally I also get an log entry for closing ftp session like "Jan 9 05:17:22 ix2-200-DC386F proftpd: pam_unix(ftp:session): session closed for user Helmut", but in this case - testing FTP connection with TI - this log entry is missing. So it seems the connection is established to my NAS, but not completely finished. If I test a second and more times, no entry from proftpd is logged. The log entry about session closed "Jan 9 09:26:12 ix2-200-DC386F proftpd: pam_unix(ftp:session): session closed for user Helmut" will be posted after closing program TI.

I tried to use windows FTP console command and this works successfully, also FileZilla Client (FTP) and ipswitch WS_FTP 12. FTP with TI 2010 on Windows XP works also sucessfully, only TI2011 and TI2012 don't work. Your mentioned kb articles I have already reviewed and there is nothing I made wrong. But there in kb are no advices in case of failure.

You wrote also "Also, make sure you don't have any mapped drives to the destinations", but Iomega Storage Manager makes by default for each share from the NAS samba server a drive letter mapping, but after removing all mapings, FTP also don't works with TI. Other FTP connections I can successfully test and establish (to router FTP, to linux computer and to acronis FTP server), but not to NAS.

Hallo,

I now have installed wireshark to see what happens on network by trying to connect by FTP with TI to my NAS:
I could see in wireshark a successfully established FTP connection with my NAS from TI ("anonymous login ok, ..." "Anonymous access granted, restrictions apply"), but in GUI of True Image there is nothing to see appart "connection failed". I tried a second connection with FileZilla to see the differences in communication: NAS answers with "UNIX Type : L8", then TI send the commands "OPTS MLST Size;Modify;Type". NAS answers with "200 OPTS MLST size;modify;type;". Then request from TI "MLST /". Then "250-Start of list for /" und "End of list" from NAS. With FileZilla it is different: After also "Anonmyous access granted, rectrictions appley" and "UNIX Type: L8" from NAS, FileZilla request "FEAT", "PWD" and "TYPE I" and "PASV" before request "MLSD" is sent.

I have no idea, while a FTP connections is build up successfully, but True Image GUI shows me "connection failed". I have already made two repair installations of TI 2012.

Hi, I'm having a similar issue with ABR 11.5 to backup on nas QNAP TS-469L by FTP. Did you solve that please ? Thanks

Alexis,

You have posted in the True Image Home product section of the Forum. You should post this question into the Acronis Backup and Restore 11.5 section of the Forum located here: http://forum.acronis.com/forums/acronis-business-products-discussions/a…

I have till now no solution.

Hello Helmut F., Hello Alexis BEN EL HADJ,

Thank you for posting this question in our forum. I am happy to assist you.

If possible, please try to use standard UNC path (\\name_of_your_nas_or_ip_address\user) names to connect to your NAS. FTP protocol is an common standard with low performance, compared to the default networt protocol. You can use this article in our knowledge base to backing up to NAS.

@Alexis: If you need additional assistance, please create a system report and network protocol of the affected machine and contact support. You will find all available support options in our Customer handbook.

@Helmut: I did not find any support cases where you asked for assistance with this issue. Please contact us with a system report and the already created wireshark protocol.

If there is anything else we can do for you, please let me know.

Thank you.

Hallo Mr. Peter Vigoureux,

thank you for answering to this thread. Acronis decided more than a year ago to give me no more support, because I had to much open tickets, which costs to much to solve. Since this time I do without conntacting Acronis support by email or telephone and try to get a solution in this forum. Meanwhile I use True Image 2013 by Acronis, but the problem is still the same. I can successfully connect with TI by FTP to my AVM FRITZ!Box FTP server FRITZ!NAS, but not to my NAS Iomega IX2-200 StorCenter with FTP. Over network share I can make a backup to NAS, but not with FTP.

Helmut,

Do you have FTP turned on for the IX2-200?

"FTP File Sharing
On the Protocols page, click the switch to turn on FTP (File Transfer Protocol) and allow access to your Iomega StorCenter ix2-dl .
Click to select either FTP or secure FTP (SFTP) or both. You must enable security to apply SFTP. If you select and enable SFTP, you cannot have the secure Rsync protocol enabled.
When you turn on FTP, you can send files to your StorCenter ix2-dl ."

James F,

as you can see in uploaded wireshark protocol, the FTP connection to StorCenter ix2-200 is established by True Image, but in ATI GUI it is marked as failed. FTP is switched on on NAS and I can use FTP to StorCenter with the following FTP clients: ipswitch WS FTP 12, FileZilla, Windows Explorer, FTP on windows console. I know SFTP (secure FTP) is only possible if RSync is disabled (it is disabled).

Sorry, Helmut, I didn't read the earlier posts.

My mistake.

James

No matter, James F.

But it is a little bit courious: with True Image Home 2011 on Windows XP. I got an FTP connection to StorCenter NAS in GUI (but also other problems regarding FTP - see first post). On Windows 7 64Bit Home Premium - three different installations - I don't get it in GUI of True Image 2012 (in past) and 2013 (present). Whireshark protocols a successfull connection with FTP.

Hello Helmut F.,

Thank you for your replies.

I want to thank James F. for supporting you.

Your issue seems to match the problem described in this article from our knowledge base. I searched in the official user guide and could not find the supported ftp commands. However this does not mean, that the NAS device could not work with the MLST or MLSD command. You can test it using a ftp tool (e.g. Filezilla) and see, if this can list the content of the ftp share.

To avoid this issue, you should not use the ftp protocol in situations, where ftp is not necessary (e.g. usage in home-lan only). Using UNC path is the preferred method. See this article in our knowledge base.

I have added a screenshot in German language from your acccount, that shows, how to access an PPI (pay per incident) support case to get assistance from Acronis Customer Central.

If there is anything else we can do for you, please let me know.

Thank you.

Hallo Peter Vigoureux,

thank you for so much info. I think my NAS Iomega StorCenter FTP Server does support MLST and MLSD (see below): Each other FTP client - like FileZille, Windows FTP, FTP with Windows Explorer, ipswitch WS FTP 12 don't use command MLST on connection establishment, only Acronis True Image does. I told already, that all other FTP clients, execpt Acronis True Image - can successfully connect to my NAS by FTP, can list the content of the ftp share, can up- and download files etc.

Here the log for MLSD:
Verbinden des Datenkanals mit 192.168.2.99:135,158(34718)
Datenkanal verbunden mit 192.168.2.99:135,158(34718)
MLSD
150 Opening ASCII mode data connection for MLSD
- 1593 Bytes in 0.037 Sekunden übertragen, 344.413 kbit/s ( 43.052 kbit/s), Übertragung erfolgreich.
226 Transfer complete
226 Transfer complete

and here for MLST:
MLST
250-Start of list for /pools/A/A0
modify=20130128231615;perm=fle;type=cdir;unique=FD02U80;UNIX.group=0;UNIX.mode=0755;UNIX.owner=0; /pools/A/A0
250 End of list

Conclusion: I'm not willing to buy a "pay for incident". The problem is not on my side and is either a bug in True Image or an unsupported NAS FTP server like ProFTP. The problem occures in True Image 2011, 2012 and 2013 already after first installation within the first four weeks and I tried to get support by Acronis opening a ticket, but I got no support.

Hello Helmut,

Thank you for your reply.

I found some old tickets and could see, that you are using many different hardware routers to attach different NAS systems to it. The main question, you did not yet answer is, what exact you want to achieve and why it is necessary to use ftp protocol.

At your wireshark screenshot I can see, that you are using no credentials. Only anonymus login. What in the posts above you where asked is, to define a network share with specific user credentials and login using this user.

I am looking forward for your reply.

Thank you.

Sorry Peter, I' not using different routers and I'm not using different NAS, always the same NAS. I just changed in May 2012 my router from a Telekom Speedport W910V to an AVM FRITZ!Box 7390. And I'm using credentials to log in with FTP using Acronis True Image login dialog. NAS also supports anonymous login and it was only a test, because it does't work with credentials and without credentials.

You ask, why it is necessary to us ftp protocol! It isn't necessary, but it should work with ATI. I can use network shares, to save backups on NAS, but FTP is a little bit faster storing backups from my computer to NAS.

Acronis already reported in Knowledge Base http://kb.acronis.com/content/1843, that ProFTP server are not supported. My NAS Iomega StorCenter uses ProFTP (see previous post screenshot "windows_console_ftp_with_nas.jpg" ProFTPD Server 1.3.3). So there is no more need to anaylse my posts. because command MLST is not supported (see uploaded screenshot).
