Backup name

Thread needs solution

I get REALLY cross with the way TI 2013 tries to be far too clever for its own good. I want it to do what I tell it, not what it thinks I should want to do!

Can anyone tell me why, when I create a file backup using "Backup name: XYZ", it insists on calling the backup "My_Backup...."?

And why, if I save the backup in a folder that already has a file called "ABC..." but specify "Backup name: XYZ", it uses "ABC..." as the file name?

I want to do what I did with previous versions, and manage full/incremental files myself. On the 1st of the month, I create a full backup with, e.g., file name "20130701 My Documents", then take incremental backups every day until the 1st of the next month when I edit the plan to start with another full backup "20130801 My Documents", and so on.

With TI 2013, whatever "Backup name" I assign, it decides on a file name for itself and I seem to have no control over it.

The one and only reason i upgraded to 2013 was for Windows 8 support. I desperately wish I hadn't had to. 2010 worked just fine, for me. I HATE 2013 and yet had to pay good money for it! I should have stuck with EaseUS Todo.

Yes, you can control the name of the *.tib file and yes you can control the name of the folder where the backup files are stored, and yes, you can 99% control the Backup Name (task name).

but there is no way of avoiding the suffix the program adds after your custom nameto each *.tib file such as
your custom name _full_b1_s1_v1.tib
your custom name _inc_b1_s2_v1.tib

Control of the custom backup file name and custom folder occurs when you create the backup file name--refer link #2 below, and look at figure 8. This is the only place you have any control over the file name or over the folder name.

Control or changing the task name occurs just prior to completing the task creation. The task name is called "Backup name" and can be changed just prior to the " Backup Now" option and this is illustrated in Green color link figure 18 as part of the same link #2 below.

PS I usually use my machine name as part of the file name for a data backup. If TI 2013 insists on using "MyBackup" as the file name, regardless of what I put in the "Backup name" field, how can I backup data from two machines in a shared backup folder?

I've been using TI for many years but Acronis really does seem to be trying too hard now, taking control away from users. I'm not a happy customer!

Ah. Thanks GroverH. I'll take a look now. It's a shame the help files didn't make it easier for me to find out for myself when I searched for things like "file name" and "backup name".

Grover,

You've done some terrific work there (thank you!). Unfortunately it doesn't seem to solve my problem. You'll see from the attached screenshot that I called both the Backup name and the file name 'NP770Z5E' and yet the name of the file created when the job was run was 'MyBackup'. I'm mystified by this and wish I could revert to an earlier version of TI that didn't try to be so smart and take control away from the user.

Any further thoughts?

Dave

You have the opportunity to choose a name for the .tib backup file when you create a new backup task. At the point that you select the destination location, you may enter your desired filename for the backup. That's the only time that you can choose a name. If you try to edit the task later, you'd just be changing the name of the backup task but not the filename.

Dave,
Don't be discouraged. Each new version has its learning curve and we all have been there.

Review the link 2 again. Inside link 2, click the green color link and pay particular attention to figures 6-7-8 and 18.
In figure 7, be sure and click the Browse option at bottom of open Explorer window.
Before you leave your figure 7, take a screen capture so we can see where you are and what you are seeing.

Your attachment has a tech problem and not fully viewable.
The task name appears to be what you wanted and the fle name being wrong makes me believe you are on the wrong screen.

My instructions relate to Disk/Partiton type backups but the Files Backup is similar.
I just completed a test backup of "MyTextFiles" and was able to choose a custom folder with a custom name.
You mentioned using machine name.
My machine name is "Grovers-Asus"
The backup tib name I used was MyTextFiles\@machinename@_.tib
The target folder used was DaveH on drive J.
The machine name can be used as part of the backup file name but will not automatically be added to the task name.
Before saving the task, I typed or changed the task name (backup name) and typed/added "Grovers-Asus_'" (my machine name) as the task name.
The resulting file backup was named "MyTextFiles_Grovers-Asus_full_b1_s1_v1.tib"

So, if I am understanding your needs correctly, the program will allow you to name it what you are wanting it to do.

When doing the file backup, when you are on the "Configure the file backup process"
1. The source is where you select folders or files to be included within the backup.
2. Click Destination arrow.
3. Click Browse and browse into the correct disk
4. Select pre-created folder name or create custom folder and then select the custom storage folder. Recheck for correctness.
5. Remove any existing file name and add your own either manually or via the drop down box.
..........Before you leave this screen, the folder must be correct and the file name correct.
6. Before you click OK, do a screen capture of this screen.
7. After clicking the OK button, you should be returned to the first "Configure File Backup process"
8. Now, change the task name (backup name) to whatever you want to appear as the task name on the main GUI display of tasks. When you see is what you get.
8. The file name assigned to the *.tib backup file will be what you selected iin step 5.
