Backup naming

Thread needs solution

Hello,

I don't understand the concept behind backup naming.
I have created a schedule to do a weekly incremental backup to external disk.
I named the backup G:\Weekly.tib.
Each week a new backup file is created with consecutive numbers: Weekly.tib, Weekly2.tib, Weekly3.tib, Weekly4.tib.
So far so good.
If I now go and change the backup configuration, TIH tells me Weekly4.tib does already exist, if I want to overwrite it. What does that mean? I just want to make a change and then would like TIH to continue with Weekly5.tib. Instead, it continues with Weekly4(1).tib.
What is wrong here?

Michael,
As you have found out, if edited, TrueImage tasks can cause unexpected results. This is a known issue.

The editing of a task is not recommend and better results can usually be obtained by creating a new task with the new parameters.

If you wish to provide me with the task settings you are using inside your task, I may be able to help you perform an edit if you will supply the task settings--particularly the settings of the
Backup method page
and are you using any kind of consolidation.
Type of backup (partition or files/folders type backup)

Also suggest that you open Windows explorer and examine the file sizes of the Weekly backup. Are all the file sizes about the same (all full backups) or is the base large and the others much smaller (which would indicate one full plus others are incremental's).

What is it you are trying to achieve?
What type of backups (Disk& partitions; or data)
Full? or Full plus some incremental's?
How many and how often?

If editing and you want the backup number to continue, inside the "What to backup" window, you can checkmark the "add to existing" and select your base backup. And then, inside the Backup Location Window, change the wrong number to the correct number. If the wrong number file actually exists, you will have to move it or delete it before editing out the wrong number.

Whatever TrueImage options you are using, you should examine the possibility of adding Chain2Gen as a backup helper in managing your TrueImage backup retention. Check the link inside my signature link below. It use takes the worry out of maintaining the correct and type of backups.

Hello,

I have the same problem: I have an existing backup chain of one full backup "MyBackup.tib" and three incremental backups "MyBackup2.tib, MyBackup3.tib" and "MyBackup4.tib". If I change the backup configuration, e.g. the validation time, and save them, then ATI2011 Build 5519 did not continue my existing backup chain, it starts a new one with a full backup. This is also the case, when a backup is disconneted from the "my backup"-list and must then manually be added with "search for backups". The backup settings then didn't recognize the existing backup chain and it is not possible to continue the existing backup chain. The name of the new backup is then "MyBackup(1).tib" instead of "MyBackup5.tib" for the forth incremental backup in chain.

How can I continue a existing backup chain in this case after changing the backup configuration or after manually adding a backup chain?

Editing a task seems to cause the ATI2011 database to treat some or all of existing backups as belonging to another task and the edited task then constitutes a new one (to the database). We users are hoping this will be fixed in the impending next build of ati2011.
