Backup & Restore or Clone?
Hello Folks--
Recently I learned a great lesson on the advantages of doing a backup and restore instead of cloning a drive, but that scenario was different than what I've got going on now.
Now, I will be replacing a standard magnetic master boot drive with a hybrid drive and need your advice on whether the backup and restore model is ideal for my scenario or whether I should just do a clone.
1). There is nothing wrong with my current boot drive. It is new and healthy and so are the files on it.
2). I have a dual boot computer. One physical drive boots to Win XP and the other drive (the one I'm replacing) boots to Win 7. I use NeoSmart's Easy BCD to edit my boot.ini file(s)--and it works great. After I replace the Win 7 bootable drive, I want it to boot the same way as before (dual boot option shown in the pre-boot sequence).
3) I have a third drive that is just for data and is not bootable that both bootable drives access and that will remain unchanged.
Anyway, I think that gives a pretty good idea of what I've got and what I want to end up with. When someone in this forum recommended backup and restore before, that was for replacing a damaged, non-boot drive.
Thanks!
Stephen

I do regular Backups when installing Windows, on a non-damaged drive, and as a regular backup routine. It's not just for damaged drives.
As James says, Backup is much better than Clone for so many reasons. Really, many user problems and much frustration would be avoided if users would forget Clone and use Backup instead.

Perfect, guys. I really appreciate the input. When my computer is down my whole life seems out of balance!
Thanks,
