Backup stalls when computer goes to sleep
On several occasions we have manually started a backup (no schedule) and left it running unattended. Upon returning, we find that the computer has gone into SLEEP mode and the backup has stalled. Once the computer wakes up, the backup continues. Why is our backup operation stalling?

Hello Grover,
Thank you for the resource links, we appreciate the effort you have placed into creating these useful subjects.
We have read the subjects, and confirmed that the advanced scheduling options for preventing the computer from sleeping during the backup were checked. Yet, the backup still stalls. However, note the following:
FIRST, the advanced settings are in the scheduling dialog, but we are not performing a scheduled backup, but manual backups using the "Backup Now" button. Are the advanced settings activated during a manual (versus scheduled) start?
SECOND, our current Windows 7 (64-bit) power setting mode is "High Performance" so the screen saver plays, but the computer is never placed into sleep mode.
Any ideas? Have others experienced this problem?

1. If the task is unscheduled, the advanced settings "should" not apply, or I am not aware of their use.
2. I would suggest that you visit the Control panel/power options/high performance option.
Click the change settings opiton and examine some of the settings. Perhaps you have option checked to never sleep. There may be several options applicable here.

Thanks again for the suggestions. It is unfortunate that the 'Wake Computer' and 'Prevent Sleep' options are only available for the scheduled backup and not available for backup schemes that have been manually started - perhaps in the backup scheme dialog.

For computers which go to sleep, you might consider looking at my link #3 below. Inside that link, review item #9.
Yes, I would like to see sleep options applicable to all backups.
Or, you might also be able to run the backup from a Windows scheduler manually and make some sleep adjustments there although I have not tried it.
