Backup starts over and over until the disk is full

Thread needs solution

Hi @all,

some months ago we bought TI2015 to replace NovaBackup. At this time TI was configured to write incremental backups to a NAS, which was connected to the PC as a Windows-Networkshare. After a while the NAS was broken, and we decided to buy two external USB-Hardrives, which should be used rotationally. We also changed the backup strategy from incremental to full backup once a week. The backup-file is about 100 GB, and the external disk are 1 TB. So we wanted to have 7 Backups stored at each disk and then the oldest should be deleted.

This was working for three weeks, and then TI starts going nuts: It starts the backup, and at the end of the backup it seems to find an error, and starts the backup again until the disk is full. The Logfile "service_<date-time>.log shows some messages like ""Error opening the configuration-file", "Error on creating the file...", "The starting full-backup-version isnt available at the moment..." and so on. (The latest files are attached).

Whats going wrong? Thanks for looking into it...

kind regards, Jens

If you attempted to change an existing task to new settings, it will never work again.
Stop using the old task and start over with a new task with a new task name.
Configure the new backup scheme as per this example, except perhaps add the option to keep the original which is the "do not delete the first version of the backup", and change the store number from 4 to 5. That will consume space for 6 fulls and that's all the space you have for the 1 TB disk.
GH11. Create Custom Full Backup Scheme w/auto cleanup.
...Store/Keep 4 versions (chains). Use whatever number best fits the individual needs..

Automatic deletion will occur once you exceed your number of fulls to keep.

Doesn't work :(

I did the following:

  • Deleted all backup-configurations in TI 2015.
  • connect two external harddisks to the computer, Windows recognized them both as "Toshiba External Drive" and give them the drive-letters G and H
  • rename the first ext. harddisk to "Ext_1" and the second harddisk to "Ext_2".
  • assigning drive-letter "Y" to "Ext_1" and drive-letter "Z" to "Ext_2"
  • open TI 2015 and start configuring an "New Backup"-Task.
    • Source: the whole drive "C"
    • Target: "Y"
    • Backup-Type: "Full"
    • Auto-Cleanup is switched on, with holding the 3 newest backups and NOT holding the first backup
    • saving this configuration as own backup-scheme
  • This backup should run once a week, every Tuesday at 7:00 pm.

Then i configured the same again for a second backup task, but with the second external disk as target.

If one backup-task starts (no matter if it would be started manually or by a schedule), it seems to work as it should, but later it seems to search for old backups, whaich are made also with acronis onto a network-drive, which isnt available anymore as you can see in the attached log. And i dont know why TI is searching for these old backups.  At least TI 2015 ends this backup-task as failed, and starts again, and after a while the external disk is full, so the latest try will be ended with the message "target disk is full".

What can i do now?

cheers, Jens

Jens,

Unfortunately, I cannot help with any log interpretation as I only read/write English.

It is difficult for me to tell exactly all your procedures so I will list what I feel you need to do to get this to work. If you used your own custom name for the name of the backup scheme,  this would cause what is happening--due to a bug in 2015. Note my scheme example. The type of backup scheme must read "custom"--not a name assigned by you.

http://forum.acronis.com/forum/96972

Also note that with your setting of keeping 3 full rotationg backups. The deletion of oldest backup does not occur until after the 4th full has been created--thus you must provide enough storage space for 4 full backups on both Ext_1 and Ext_2 in order to avoid the disk full message.

1. You have written of having several issues. My recommendation is to run the 2015 TI Cleanup utility found in my signature link #4 below.
This utility will both uninstall 2015 and cleanup the registry of old 2015 settings.  Afterwards, you will need to do a new full install of 2015 and will need access to your 2015 serial.  All new backup tasks will need to be created but the cleanup will not affect any tib backups you might have.

2. a. Attach Ext_1 (drive Y) and begin to create the first backup task. Confirm drive letter as being letter Y.
   b. Assign task name of Y-Ext1-EntirePC(Jens-HP) (or something similar . Include either drive letter or external disk # within task name.
   c. Type backup: Select  Entire PC
   d. Target: Ext_1, drive letter Y, Create new storage folder named HP-WIN7-BACKUP, name of tib file will automatically become same as final task name such as Y-Ext1-EntirePC(Jens-HP) _FULL_B1_S1_V1
Final Path of  completed tib backup: Y:\HP-WIN7-BACKUP\Y-Ext1-ENTIREPC(Jens-HP)_FULL_B1_s1_v1
   e. Add any other task settings such as validation, scheduling for Y, passwords, task notification, etc.
   f. Save the task via the Save later option per example below.
   g. Confirm task name is correct. Use task rename feature if needed. Task name should be as listed in item b. "Y-Ext1-EntirePC"
   h.  No backup to be run now. Backup via schedule different than task 2.
   i.  Remove Ext_1, drive Y

3. a. Attach Ext_2 (drive Z) and begin to create the next backup task. Confirm drive letter as being letter Z.
   b. Assign task name of Z-Ext2-EntirePC(Jens-HP) (or something similar . Include either drive letter or external disk # within task name.
   c. Type backup: Select  Entire PC
   d. Target: Ext_2 drive letter Z, Create new storage older named= HP-WIN7-BACKUP, name of tib file will automatically become same as final task name such as Z-Ext2-EntirePC(Jens-HP)_FULL_B1_S1_V1
Final Path of  completed tib backup: Z:\HP-WIN7-BACKUP\Z-Ext2-ENTIREPC(Jens-HP)_FULL_B1_s1_v1
   e. Add any other task settings such as validation, scheduling for Z, passwords, task notification, etc.
   f. Save the task via the Save later option per example below.
   g. Confirm task name is correct. Use task rename feature if needed. Task name should be as listed in item b. "Z-Ext2-EntirePC"
   h.  No backup to be run now. Backup via schedule different than task 1.
   i.  Remove Ext_2, drive Z

4. Examples: If you decide to change anything, let me see so we can agree before backups are performed.

An example: scheme name must be custom

Hi Grover,

thank you very, very much for this very detailed answer. I will try to follow your instructions in the next days and will give a report then.

thx, Jens

Jens,

After you try the above,  I would be interested in knowing how my procedures may have differed (if anyh) from what you had been doing before.

Thanks.

Grover
