Bad sectors problem after verification

Thread needs solution

Hello. I am running Windows XP SP3 with Acronis True Image 11 Home.

I have a 1Tb external LaCie drive which I use for regular backups. A few days ago I performed a full system backup and I had the two following email status reports.

Message 1:

Full System Backup Task is waiting for user interaction.
Description: Create Full Backup Archive

Compression: Normal
Description:
"Full System Backup"

Problem Info: Failed to read data from the disk.
Problem Details: A possible reason might be bad sectors on the disk.

I immediately did a full system backup to another external drive that I own and that went through fine.

I contacted LaCie and they got me to check the LaCie drive with HD Tune to check for bad sectors. This showed there were no bad sectors. LaCie informed me that the problem is not with the LaCie drive but something to do with Acronis. They said to uninstall and reinstall Acronis to see if the problem persists. I have several scheduled backups which I don't want to set back up again if I can help it, unless you think this will sort the problem out.

Where are the bad sectors? Are they on my PC's C drive or on the external drive or do they not really exist? Since this backup, whenever I go to open up the Acronis program, it takes much longer to open if the LaCie drive is attached. It takes an age at the 'Analyzing partition F' stage.

Please can anyone advise me whether this drive does have a problem and whether an image stored on it would fail if I relied upon it for a restore? Is there anything I can do to rectify the problem please?

Many thanks for your help.

Run chkdsk /r on each partition of the internal drive, and on the external HD. If there are hidden partitions, assign letters to them so you can chkdsk.
Also run a drive checking utility from the drive manufacturer, as those sometimes catch errors missed by chkdsk.

Don't connect via a hub, a port in a monitor, a USB extension cord, etc. Connect the external drive directly to a USB port on the rear of the computer case.

I presume when I was asked by LaCie to download and run HD Tune that this was the kind of thing you mean. It ran for about 12 hours when I checked the external drive.

Although I didn't run it on my C drive, I presume this wouldn't be the problem because the backup was perfect when I used a different external drive, or am I missing something here?

I don't know. That's why you should run the tests I suggested. There's no harm in such testing, so why not do it?
Also, I didn't say to test the C: drive: I said to test every partition on the internal drive. C: is only one partition.

Things seem to be working OK again now but only just. This is what I did.

I reformatted the LaCie hard drive and did a full system backup which went through fine. I then added some more data and things started to play up again. Acronis took ages to initialize with the LaCie drive plugged in. After running a Chkdsk I plugged my LaCie drive into my husband's laptop and the Acronis program hung.

However, after reconnecting it to my own PC once again, it is now working correctly. Very odd!

In addition, the drive letter on my Western Digital drive disappeared when it was plugged in to my PC at startup. I had to disconnect it and then reconnect it to see it. But since the LaCie drive is back up and running properly, the WD drive letter has reappeared. My LaCie drive is F and my WD drive is G. Might the problem be a USB issue? I'm not technical enough to know how to diagnose such an issue if so.

PS. I haven't had time to run a Chkdsk on my PC as I can't really tie my computer up for ages. Maybe at the weekend if needed. There is only one partition on my internal hard drive which is why I referred to it as my C drive.

Many users say that, and it turns out not to be true and they can't complete a full disk restore. With Win7 and Win8, often there is a hidden partition that may in fact be the boot partition. If you backup only C: you are at risk.

Oh no, I may have spoken too soon. I've just started up Acronis again and it's taking ages on 'Analyzing partition F' and also 'Analyzing partition G'. My backups have been going through Ok over the last few days but I'm not sure why I have to wait over 5 minutes to open up Acronis when it started within a few seconds yesterday.

Well, I did advise you a week ago to run chkdsk. I don't see much point in proceeding until that's done, in the manner I described. I understand that you don't want to tie up the PC, but would you prefer to continue to deal with these ongoing problems?

I'm on Windows XP. How would I know if I have a hidden partition? I have 'Show hidden files and folders' ticked in my Folder Options. Is this enough to know or do I need to do something else to find out?

My D and E drives are a DVD RW and a DVD ROM. I still have a floppy disk drive A but no B.

Launch Windows Disk Management, take a screenshot of it showing all volumes, and post it here.

I had thought that things were sorted out until now but I will do a ChkDsk on the weekend on my PC.

I tried to do a ChkDsk on drive C. This is what I put in the Run box.

chkdsk /r C:

I said to perform the check on restart and I then turned off the PC. When I switched it on again, the screen said it was checking the disk but it took no time at all before it said The volume is clean and then it restarted Windows. This doesn't sound like a proper check. Did I do something wrong? I was expecting it to take hours, it literally took under 30 seconds.

Shall I try again under System Tools?

Revision:
I've got it going under the system tools. Will report back with the results.

This is the ChkDsk report:

Just to say that Acronis is still taking a long time to analyze drive F.

Does anyone have any advice for why Acronis is taking so long to open up. My backups seem to be verified OK so that is something but I don't understand why the program should be behaving in this way.

Please can anybody offer me some advice on whether I still have a problem with Acronis. The backups appear to verify but the program takes about 5 minutes to open up when I have an external hard drive connected. This never used to happen. It gets stuck on Analyzing the external drives.
