Thread needs solution

I am going to give my wife's machine a larger drive. I need to know if I can put a new operating system (xp pro) onto the new drive before I try and move the programs off her disk to the new disk (I am also assuming that I can do that).

I would appreciate anybody's thoughts on these two question.

Thank you...........

If you TI installed on the current machine there are 2 ways to proceed. You can clone the old drive to the new drive or create a backup image of the old drive and restore that to the new drive (preferred method).

What OS is installed on the old drive? If its XP pro you will be OK. If its not then you will end up with the new drive having the old drives OS.

I suggest your browse Grover's True Image Guides http://forum.acronis.com/forum/3426 especially this section http://forum.acronis.com/forum/29618

Thanks for the reply!

What I am trying to do is to rid the drive of the microsoft crap left behind. I have not redon this system for a long time and it probably really needs it. My thought was to install a new operating system, on the new drive (after reformatting the thing) and then move programs and data. I have no idea if this is even possible and, perhaps, the cloning will solve the problem with crap on the drive. I will also run several cleaners, before I even start, and then have at it. In other words, I would like to move programs and data only and start with a newly installed operating system.

thanks again.....

You can't move the programs and data with out overwriting the new drive. You will end up with exactly what you have now. You can restore the data files only to the new drive. You will have to re-install all the programs. When you say crap are you referring to malware etc? If you clean all the crap first from the old drive then you could use the steps I suggested to migrate to a new HD. If the old OS is XPPRO then you can do as I suggested. If not then you will have to re-install the programs and restore the data files only.

I do appreciate your reply and thoughts - thank you.....

I plan on moving all the stuff on the main drive to the main drive. All I wanted to do was to clean out the drive. I have found that one never gets rid of stuff unless one reformats. An example would be if you had a windows installation say, a year old. First clean everything up and then back up everything and then reformat and reinstall everything. After cleaning up the debris left when you re-installed (especially the operating system) you will find that there is a net gain in disk space, ie. the crap is gone. They are actually doing a better job with 7 (I will not remark on 8)

Anyway, I do not want to reinstall everything which is why I bought acronis. I will simply clone the existing drive and then use the existing drive for backup stuff. The new drive is 1tb, the old one was 500gb. I am running with xp pro, 32 bit so I will lose a bit but with those two who cares.
