Boot from Image?

Thread needs solution

I'm running Acronis TI 2010 and have a FULL computer backup.

Is it possible to boot using this backup file, or am I only able to mount it and browse files? There is a program I need to open in order to export a bunch of settings so I can import it to my new computer. Unfortunately the program needs to be running in order to export the settings.

I'm running Win 7 on this computer, and XP Pro SP3 on the previous one.

Robert:

You cannot boot from a full backup archive.

Do you have a spare hard disk? If so, restore the archive to the spare disk. Go to the PC that created the archive and then swap this disk with its main hard disk. Reboot and then do what you need to do. When finished, replace the main hard disk.

If you've restored from TI before and have confidence that restores will work correctly, then just create a new image, restore the archive, do what you need to do and when finished, restore the new image.

The previous computer is no longer bootable... When the boot from the Acronis CD to reload the backup file, it says the file is corrupt - even though it lets me mount it within windows on another computer.

I have a feeling it is due to the file being password protected, and there is no way to remove that protection.
