Bootable Clone of Windows 7 System on one USB Flash Drive/SDHC Card with Acronis True Image?

Thread needs solution

I have spent the last days searching for a simple solution to backup the Windows 7 (32) system and make the backup bootable, as I do with my Macintosh computers. I realize now that it is way more complicated and I'm not sure wether it can be done at all.

1. Can I create a bootable backup (1:1 Clone) on a flash drive or do I always need a CD? I have a Tablet PC without an optical drive. I don't mean incremental backups of files, just one copy of the entire HD with systems and applications installed.

2. Can both functions (Bakup/Clone and Boot) be assigned to one drive?

3. What's better, SDHC or USB Flash Drive? 32GB each for a 60GB HD of which about 20GB are used.

A friend recommended Acronis True Image for this and I also got the advice online but I can't find anything about this specific case. Thank you very much for your time!

Peter,

I am re-reading your post and I am not sure what you are trying to do.

If you are trying to backup your windows installation so that you can restore it fully if your disk fails, then a USB disk will work.
To restore your computer you would then need a bootable media. Acronis 2011 can make the media you backed up to bootable.
I tried to make an SDCH and a Flash Card bootable when they are plugged directly in my integrated card reader, and this didn't work. It looks like my BIOS only accepts USB disks to boot. So I plugged the flash card in a USB adapter and it worked. I guess it would work also if I plugged the SDHC in a usb adapter, but I didn't try yet.

Thank you very much, I think we mean the same thing (I mean a USB Flash Drive not an external Hard Disc). So it is possible to do it all with just one USB Flash Drive?

Is this the correct way?
1. Create Boot Media on USB Flash Drive
2. Drag a Backup Image of the system onto it (*.tib)

Or does it cause problems if both are on the same USB Flash Drive?

I also haven't gotten SD/SDHC to work from the BIOS.

With 2011 build 6597, you can also do the following:
From the application, select your USB flash drive as the backup destination, check the make bootable option under the destination (see attached). Run the backup. Voila!

Remember to test your disk and make sure you can go the first steps of the restore wizard.

(Note: on the attached, I selected the small reserved partition for illustration purposes, a correct system backup should include the system reserved and the system partition on Win 7)
