Booted from ATI Recovery media corrupted external HD

Thread needs solution

Booting from ATIH 2012 bootable recovery media, build 6154

Booting from recovery media is difficult on my new laptop, possibly due to lack of full driver support. Often I must boot several times in order for it to finally load ATIH.

This time it loaded, but as I was beginning the process to create a backup, ATIH reported that the external drive was corrupted.

I booted into Windows and connected the external HD. The disk appears in the list in "Computer", but is not accessible. Windows reports:

"The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable"

When I use Properties | Tools | "Check now" to run disk check, Windows says:

"The disk check could not be performed because Windows can't access the disk."

I suppose it's possible that somehow the external drive failed at the same time that ATIH 2012 bootable recovery media was accessing it, but it seems more likely that ATIH caused this.

Anyone seen this before, or have some insight into what happened?

My first stop would be to create a new bootable media CD. Download iso from your account--if needed.

Then see if the same thing happens.

Did you also have trouble booting with the prior build of 2012?

This is a new download of the ISO, direct from Acronis Support. Having said that, it appears identical to the build 6154 that I downloaded from my Acronis account page.

Yes, previous build recovery media was also cantankerous. It never corrupted an external drive, but then this is the first time the new one has done that.

As for the external drive, I'm going to try some tools to see if the drive can be made accessible again, with data intact. But, it may turn out that the only solution is to format it, which of course would erase all. Nothing critical on that drive, but still would prefer to access it first rather than formatting and wiping it.
