Can I restore a Primary Partition Backup to a Logical drive.

Thread needs solution

I am using TIH 2010. I take backups regularly by booting from CD and imaging my data which is in a primary partition.
My hard drive is failing and I want to move the data to a second hard drive. This has maximum partitions allocated already and so I want to move the data to a logical drive in an extended partition. The two partitions are the same size or the logical volume can be greater in size.
Is there any reason I cannot restore the backup from a primary partition to the logical partition on a different drive?
I will not restore the MBR, of course.

I didn't test this.

If the content of the partition contains boot files, you will have to relocate these boot files back onto a primary partition.

If not, if ATI's recovery CD lets you do it, you should be able to restore to any partition you want. ATI will detect whether the partition is a system partition and might just force the destination partition to be primary as well. If there is no system on the disk, it might let you restore to another partition.
