can't clone laptop hard drive

Thread needs solution

Hi everyone,

I just bought a western digital laptop hard drive with 750gb capacity and I've been trying to clone my old hard drive to the 750 gb one using "Acronis True Image WD Edition software".
However, when i click "automatic", this error shows up:

"Failed to move the selected data. Make sure that your new hard drive is not smaller than your old one and your partitions do not contain errors. You can check for the errors and correct them using a special utility".

Also, there is something werid about my 750 gb hard drive. When running in windows vista, the capacity is 698gb which is rather normal. However, when running Acronis True Image WD Edition in booting mode (I burnt bootable media builder to a dvd and used that dvd to boot), the 750 gb hard drive only shows around 89gb capacity.

Furthermore, in clone mode, when i choose "manual" and then "as is", the program says "reboot is required to complete this operation" and when i hit okay, the computer reboots itself and this error shows up

Operation 3 of 7

Copying partition sector by sector

Hard disk: 1 -> 2

Drive letter: V:

Type: OxDE (EISA configuration)

File System: FAT16

Volume Label:

Size: 78 MB ->125 MB

Current operation progress:

Operation error: Internal error: attempt to write outside partition

If you know what is wrong with my hard drive, please tell me how to fix it. Thank you so much

Hello ka mi,

Welcome to the forum and thank you for your post. I will do my best to help you with this issue.

It is caused by the EISA partition, which makes the new cloned drive lose some of its free space. We have a detailed guide with the solution here, please let me know if you were successful in resolving this problem.

I would also really appreciate if our Forum MVPs  could post additional troubleshooting resources, I remember they posted some really good suggestions as well.

If you have additional questions, please let me know.

Thank you.

I have an HP 530 laptop with 80GB hard disk running Windows Vista. I have run out of space and I just bought a 500 GB. I have been trying to clone the 500 GB with True Image Home 2011. Knowledge Base 2931: Cloning Laptop Hard Disk describes the steps which have followed. I however, receives the error message "Clone Disk operation failed". The source is connected via USB and the target (new disk) has been put in the machine. I have tried all three data moving methods of "As is", "Proportional" and "Manual". Both laptop hard disks are Toshiba drive. What am I doing wrong?

The recommended method is to do the cloning when booted from the TI bootable media CD. Not sure from your description above whether you used the CD method.

If the cloning procedure did not work for you then try the alternate approach of performing a disk image backup and then restoring that backup onto a new disk. This is described in item #1 at this link.

Be sure your backup is a full and complete "disk option" backup to included all partitions and this backup can best be done from the bootable media TrueImage CD.
