Can't restore to smaller SSD.

Thread needs solution

I am having problems moving a system drive to a new, smaller SSD.

Here is my situation.

Source Drive: 1.5TB hard drive, 1.3TB in use.
Destination: 1TB SSD

I made a backup and excluded all the Media folders. The resulting backup is 400GB (compressed to 100GB).

But when I try and restore the backup to the 1TB SSD it refuses, saying there is not enough space.

The documentation and forums here say I should be able to do this, can anyone tell me what's wrong?

TrueImage 2015 claims the backup is 1.3TB in size which is clearly wrong as I can mount the backup image and it clearly only shows 400GB in use. Is this a bug? I don't want to have to actually delete half the hard drive before making a backup, that's what excluding files was for.

Thanks!

Yes, you should be able to do this.
Are you restoring from the recovery CD? THis is the recommended approach.

If you are, you might want to copy the media folders to another disk for safeguarding, then deleting them from your disk, then doing the backup, restore.

I tried to recover it with the Windows app, and also made a recovery USB stick and booted off that. The recovery software refused as well, the SSD was simply greyed out.

Deleting 800GB of files and folders really isn't an option I want to take.

As Pat has suggested you should attempt the restore process using the recovery or bootable media. That should get you around your issue.

EDIT: Please review this link for adding a new disk to your system. This step should be done prior to attempting the restore process.
