Can't restore using recovery CD over network.
Hello,
I'm currently testing the trial version of True Image 2010, and so far I'm liking it very much!
2 Problems however.
1. After quitting the control panel/GUI.. it leaves the "TrueImage32.exe" process running. Trying to RE-open teh program again just launches a second version of the process, and does nothing else. The only way I can run it a second time is to reboot, or ctrl+alt+del and manually kill the process. Neither of them acceptable solutions.
2.. and this is the biggy. When I try to restore using the created recover CD, it asks for a username and password for my server. My server HAS NO username and password policies set, and I don't need to log on. However, leaving these fields blank just brings up an error. It seems to insist on a password even though my server needs none!!
This otherwise excellent product is utterly ruined by these oversights. Can anyone help me? I really, really want to buy this, because of it's back up speed over the gigabit network... but these flaws can not be ignored.
Please no one suggest that I should SET a password for my server.... because I don't want to. Please don't lecture me on safety etc... it has no WAN connection, it's only connected to my LAN, which is behind a decent hardware firewall etc. I hate passwords when I'm the only user. :)

Hello David Gregory,
Thank you very much for your post. Please accept my sincerest apologies for not replying earlier. I will definitely help you with resolving these issues.
1. The TrueImage.exe process not terminating is a problem with Acronis True Image 2010 Home, it was successfully reproduced by our Quality Assurance team and a fix will be available in the next update.
2. There is no need to specify a password on your server. Would you be kind enough to let me know what operating system it has.
To resolve the issue with the password I recommend checking these 2 Knowledge Base articles that deal with:
- Setting Shared Folder Permissions to Work with Acronis True Image
I am very sorry that you were given an incorrect answer in one of your chat support sessions. The trial bootable CD's only limitation, is that it cannot create a backup. All other functions are available. I suggest to take a look at this article for a more detailed descriptions of the trial versions' limitations.
Please let me know if you have any more issues and if you have any other questions.
Thank you.

I'm also very interested in deploying Acronis to my small business customers. So I downloaded the trial version yesterday to check it out.
I have Windows 7 running in a virtual machine (VMWare). I (apparently) successfully created a backup to a drive on a synology NAS system on my LAN.
I also created a recovery CD.
I then created a brand new VM with an appropriately sized new "hard drive" and booted from the recovery CD.
When I then tried to restore my backup, I ran into two problems:
1) There was no option to restore from a file on my LAN, i.e, the Acronis restore system didn't seem to have any way for me to specify an SMB drive
2) I noticed it did support FTP so I enabled the FTP server on my NAS and tried the restore again. This time, essentially instantaneously, Acronis told me that the file image was corrupted. While of course that is always possible, I'm skeptical that that's the real problem.
Would appreciate some feedback as assuming that these issues can be addressed, this product would work very well for my customers.
Thank you

Hello David Jameson,
Thank you very much for your post. I will definitely assist you with this.
I am sorry, it is not very clear what product you are using. It is very possible, that the recovery CD that you are using, does not have the drivers for your hardware. For such cases we have a recovery CD based on ISOLINUX. You can read more about the difference between them in the following KB article.
To troubleshoot the issue with corrupt backups I would recommend the following article from our Knowledge Base.
I will send you a private message with a unique link for the trial version of the ISOLINUX recovery CD for Acronis True Image 2010 Home, assuming, this is the product you are trying out, and if you run into any issues please post here so that I can continue assisting you.
Thank you.

Thank you for the prompt response....the quality of support has a huge impact on my purchasing decisions so that's encouraging.
Yes, I was trying out True Image 2010 Home as my customers are in fact home and small office businesses so that's the appropriate tool.
I can attach an ISO directly to a VM so I will try and boot from your ISOLINUX iso and see if that helps....however, if that's a trial program as well, does that mean that my customers will have to purchase both the True Image program AND a separate program for handling restores?
In the past, when I have created recovery CDs, they typically copy the network and other necessary drivers from the running installation. That part seems to have worked OK since there's clearly a TCP/IP stack running (otherwise the FTP client wouldn't have worked). Therefore, SMB, which also sits on top of the TCP/IP stack, should work just fine.
The knowledgebase article for recovering a corrupt archive is not particularly useful since it basically says to copy the archive over....if I was able to do that, I wouldn't be having the problem I've described in the first place (grin)

SOrry for the delay in replying.
The machine I was trying to restore from the disk uses Windows 7 64 bit. The server that stores the back up uses Vista 64bit.
Thank you.

Hello David Jameson,
Thank you for your response.
Were you able to try the ISOLINUX recovery CD that I sent you?
There is no need to purchase an additional program, the full version will do both the backup and the recovery.
If you are still having issues with the ISOLINUX recovery CD, there is no need to worry because we can always gather diagnostic information from your hardware and forward this to our Linux expert, who will add the necessary drivers to the recovery CD.
Just in case, I also suggest the following articles from our KB that deal with network shares:
Getting back to you about the corrupt backup, have you tried validating it in Windows? To validate an archive, click Recovery on the sidebar. Select the archive to validate and click Validate on the toolbar.
David Gregory,
Thank you very much for the update.
Have you tried the solution offered in the 2 Knowledge Base articles that I recommended?
To localize the issue with the blank credentials, please try it only for troubleshooting purposes, this is in no way a permanent solution. Can you create a user name and password and let me know if this works?
Thank you.

Anton, per the email I sent you, I had no need of the ISOLINUX image. The issue was simply that I didn't realize that in the field for a filename, I could actually put a complete UNC entry. Once I tried that, the recovery worked flawlessly.
I still don't understand why the attempt to do recovery via FTP produced corrupted image errors as the image was clearly not corrupted since restore worked fine with UNC.
However, I'm happy that it works fine.
I am however now trying to understand the value of buying the PLUS pack. The sales pitch suggests that it allows an image to be restored to different hardware. That would be wonderful except I don't understand how it could possibly work. What happens if the different hardware has different network adapters, a different harddrive with a different kind of controller, and what happens with the stupid Windows Genuine Advantage mechanism that would presumably indicate that the license was not valid?

yes.. I have the same problem. When I try to access image files on the server, it is asking for a username and password when none is set. I even set a username and password on the server, and when I type THAT in it STILL doesn't work. So.. doesn't work without a password set, and doesn't work WITH a password set :( It just doesn't work.
The server is mirrored to a NAS via a sync program, so I tried to access the image files on the NAS via the restore disc, and that works fine. It's just the server. I've done everything in the guides you've posted. Password protected sharing is OFF, and I've given every conceivable privelidge to all users, and "everyone".. still asks for a password, and fails to access the server.. it makes no difference if there's a password set or not.
:(

Hello David Jameson and David Gregory,
Thank you for getting back to me. I am happy that it all came down to the UNC path to access your network share.
There are many reasons why the image could be corrupt while it is located on the ftp server, for example it could be a problem with network dropouts or the network cable, etc.
The Acronis Universal Restore in the Plus Pack for Acronis True Image 2010 Home works the following way: It installs boot device drivers (e.g. hard drive or RAID controller drivers) into the system during the recovery process, so that the operating system can boot from this boot device. If there are proper NIC drivers present in the folder with the drivers, Acronis Universal Restore will copy them into the restored system and will schedule their installation on Windows boot-up.
I recommend the following articles from our Knowledge Base that describe Acronis Universal Restore in more detail:
1. Acronis True Image Home 2010 Plus Pack: Using Acronis Universal Restore
2. Acronis True Image Home 2010 Plus Pack
3. Installation of Acronis Plus Pack for Acronis True Image Home 2010
After migrating to new hardware, if your Windows operating systems starts asking for an activation key, I recommend contacting Microsoft support.
Dear David Gregory,
I have checked with our experts and here is what they recommended to get around the issue with credentials.
Please try disabling the SMB 2.0 protocol, for more detailed instructions please refer to this article.
If this solution does not resolve the issue please create a support case at our website, provide me with the case number either here, or via a private message so that I can take personal care of this.
Kindly create the following log so that we can troubleshoot this problem. Boot to your Acronis recovery CD and try to access your share a few times, with and without credentials. You will be getting errors as usual. After that, please do not close the program and press either CTRL F7 or press the alt key on your keyboard->help->generate system report. Please attach this report to the case.
If you have any other questions, gentlemen, please let me know.
