Clone Disk

Thread needs solution

I have recently purchased a Toshiba X300 4TB hard drive to replace a Samsung 2TB drive in my Windows 10 desktop PC. I used the cloning tool within Acronis True Image 2015 to transfer the data from the Samsung 2TB drive to the Toshiba 4TB drive expecting to find the extra space available on the Toshiba drive. Instead I have what appear to be four partitions as follows:-

  1. System Reserved – 100MB NTFS
  2. The main C drive - 2047.46GB NTFS
  3. 450MB
  4. 1678.02 Unallocated

The problem is that I cannot seem to find a way to retrieve the unallocated space. I have tried the Windows 10 Disk Management tool and when I right click on the unallocated partition the options to ‘Create Simple Volume’ etc.  are greyed out. I have also tried the ‘Recover Lost Partitions’ tool in MiniTool Partition Wizard to no avail.

I now have the feeling that I should have partitioned the Toshiba drive into two 2TB partitions before I started this.

Any advice on how to recover this lost partition would be gratefully received.

Ian, from the sound of your description in your post, you look to have hit the 2TB limit for a MBR partitioned disk drive.

See webpage: Understanding the 2 TB Limit in Windows Storage

In order to go beyond the 2TB limit you will need to convert your disk drive from MBR to GPT partitioning, which in turn requires that your computer supports UEFI / EFI as the bootloader in order to support GPT.

If you already are booting Windows 10 in UEFI mode then that will make matter much easier.

See webpage: How to Convert GPT Disk to MBR Disk?

Many thanks for your help.

I think I understand now.

I managed to clean the Toshiba drive using DISKPART and this article:-

Obviously I cannot clone a GPT disk from a non GPT disk. I presume if I want to use my GPT disk as a boot disk I would have to clean install Windows 10 and reload all my apps etc. Is this the case?

I wish HDD manufacturers would include some documentation to this effect with their products!

Best wishes,

Ian
