Clone disk issue

Thread needs solution

Hi,
I am cloning a disk via bootable cd on an ibm t61 with the target disk in a usb caddy. The cloning appears to run ok and the new disk starts up but windows update wont work, neither will IE download files and windows indexing doesn't start.

Any solutions would be very helpful as this is most infuriating and is a customers machine!!
Cheers

It might be more of a Micro$oft issue than a cloning issue. I fought for a few weeks trying to fix what sounds like the same issue without any cloning involved and finally found an answer that works here:
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_xp-windows_upd…

If not check the error codes that show up in the windows update history and take it from there.

Normally, if this is a Thinkpad, the placement of the target disk, before or a restore or clone, needs tyo be inside the computer.

retry again but before the clone or restore, use the CD Add new disk option to make the target disk as unallocated.

After cloning, shutdown and reboot with only the newly cloned disk connected.

You still may need to run the user crteated Windows recovery CD and do a Startup repair from the Windows boot CD.

Thanks for the responses. I read this post http://windowssecrets.com/forums/showthread.php/144821-Can-t-access-Win… on my travels which describes the same issues and when I ran SFC it went bonkers with many corrupt files!! I am unsure if this product has an impact on the clone process or it is M$ forgetting to tell us something about cloning their product!! Any help is still greatly appreciated.

Si.
