Clone Dual Boot XP and Ubuntu?

Thread needs solution

I have a 300 GB IDE HD with XP and Ubuntu, grub loads first to select which OS to boot into. Can I use Acronis True Image Home 2010 to clone this disk to a 1 TB SATA drive?

I know the IDE -> SATA works as I have done this but I have not done a clone of a dual OS disk. My research here shows possible MBR issues and I’d like to know if using Acronis in XP will clone the entire disk including the Ubuntu partition or does it just clone the XP partition?

Hello Greer!

Thank you for your question!

Cloning procedure definitely clones the entire drive, so both your OSes will be cloned. We don't expect any issues with the scenario you have specified, just don't forget to unplug one of the drives after cloning is finished.

Also it is highly preferable to perform cloning operation from the Bootable Media CD to avoid messing with the OS. You can find more information regarding cloning in the chapter 20, p. 162 of Acronis True Image Home 2010 User's Guide.

Should you need anything else or have any further questions - feel free to contact us at your earliest convenience, we will be happy to help you!

Thank you.

I made the clone from 300GB IDE to 1 TB SATA and had a problem when GRUB got overwritten “GRUB loading, Error: unknown file system, Grub rescue>”. I used Super Grub Disk to repair Grub, XP was fine but then there were some other minor issues with Ubuntu.

At this point I’m going to uninstall Ubuntu and reclaim the disk space for XP (backing up some important Ubuntu files first). Then I’ll reinstall Ubuntu and size its partition accordingly. Ubuntu is easy to install and this will be the fastest method as opposed to spending hours trying to repair the minor bugs Ubuntu.
