Clone W7 Ultimate PC to previously W8 Pro Lap Top
Hi Guys
Using Acronis we cloned our Windows 7 Ultimate PC to a Buffalo back up hard drive.
We then cloned the Buffalo back up hard drive to a Samsung Lap Top.
The Samsung Lap Top will not start / boot into the Windows 7 Ultimate operating system.
The Windows 7 Ultimate operating system previously booted successfully on the Lap Top, but we have substantial work on the PC and thought it easier to simply Clone the whole lot over.
Do we need to go into BIOS, do we need to change Boot, any ideas, Thank You.

Hi Bob
Thank You for your response.
Our small business main Desk Top computer is with Windows 7 Ultimate.
Our Lap Top is 6 months old, 17" screen, high spec, Samsung, and was Windows 8 Pro.
We clone the Desk Top PC with Acronis to a back up external Buffalo hard drive every 2 weeks.
We used Acronis to clone back from the Buffalo to the Lap Top.
The installation is there on the Lap Top but it will not boot.
You say that we might need to:
1. Format the Lap Top hard drive - how do we do that.
2. Use Acronis to clone the Desk Top PC directly to the Lap Top - how do we do that, can we do that with a USB cable.
Thank You for all assistance.

Saving to your Buffalo NAS never did a 'clone', maybe a
backup, whih created a file you may not use to restore a complete PC, if you did not use the 'complete drive' rather than 'partion' option.
Cloning only works 'disk-to-disk', but you may have success to backup the full laptop drive as a volume to a file on the NAS, which you can restore to a blank drive for the new client. Best way to do it is normally the 'cold' way by booting the source machine with the ATI boot CD, this making shure no files are locked.......

Try booting from the user created Windows Recovery CD and do a "Startup repair".
Link 3 below, item 2 and item 3 inside that link could help.
Hopefully, your normal backups are the "disk image" or "disk mode" type as illustrated via the first picture in link 2 below.

Hi there again and Thank You for response.
We reinstalled a fresh version of our Windows 7 Ultimate operating system on the Lap Top from our Windows 7 Ultimate DVD.
We purchased an upgrade to our Acronis 2011 to Acronis 2014.
The plan now is to find a way for the Lap Top and the PC to recognise each other in Acronis, and then Clone across the PC to the Lap Top.
We have connected the Lap Top and the PC by LAN cable and by USB Cable and can see that in Network and Sharing there are 2 computers recognised.
However, we can`t find a way for Acronis to recognise the PC and also the Lap Top.
It may be that the only way is to take the hard drive out of the Lap Top and connect it inside the PC.
Acronis might then recognise it.
Unless you have any ideas.
Thank You again for all advice.

Confused! Cloning is used solely to make an exact disk image from one disk to another. It si not used to copy individual files/folders from one disk to another. Users choose the clone option to say copy an OS installation from an old disk to a new disk.
You state you have performed a fresh install of Win 7 on the laptop. So now you have Win 7 on both the desktop and the laptop. What purpose would you have to now clone 1 to the other? This does not make sense.
Please specify what your objective is. If you need to copy files/folders from the desktop to the laptop and given they are on the same network and appear in the network views on the machines, you do not need Acronis at all. If you wish to copy files from the desktop to the NAS and then access them with the laptop that is doable without Acronis. If you wish to backup your entire disks on either machine to the NAS so that you have a copy of the installations that is doable using Acronis as long as you use the "disk image" or "disk mode" option when creating the backup with Acronis and you purchased the 3 user license so that you can install Acronis on both machines.
Not knowing what exactly it is that you wish to accomplish makes a solution impossible.

Hi Bob
The Desktop PC has some 450gb of programmes and work which we wish to copy over all together with the operating system to the new Laptop.
Copying the lot over means for instance we don't have to install programmes we use such as ACAD Design software, and Internet, Outlook Email settings.
We are currently attempting to download drivers, updates, etc., and gain access to internet for a start.
None of which would be necessary if we were able to find a way to clone the entire Desktop PC over to the new Laptop.
Any assistance appreciated.
How do we clone the entire bootable PC over to the new Laptop.

Ok, now that you have established your objective we know where your at and where you need to go. I assume you have created a bootable media disk from which you can run Acronis? If not you will need to do so. Once done you will need to boot your desktop using that disk. Once booted you need to run the Acronis app. Once it is running choose tools and utilities, then clone. You should be able to see all attached disks from the resulting screen. If you cannot see the laptop disk, choose the add new disk option and see if it will appear. If you can see it and/or you can see it by add new disk, then you can perform the clone.
Are you using 2 different size disks? Going from larger to smaller or vice versa? If you are it is probably a good idea to run a manual clone and choose a proportional transfer of the partition so that Acronis will adjust the disks accordingly.
Hope this helps, I would try doing this with the laptop connected via USB first as the ethernet connection could prove more problematic.
