Cloning HDD to SSD using Acronis True Image HD

Thread needs solution

Hello, I have just purchased a 240 gb Crucial SSD and the associated desktop install kit containing Acronis True Image HD CD, 3.5” adapter tray and SATA Cable.
In my current desktop Windows 7 64 bit machine I have all 4 of the drive bays populated with SATA 1 TB HDDs.
My target is to replace the HDD which contains the ‘C’ drive (500mb) and the ‘I’ drive (500mb) with the new SSD, but only have the new SSD loaded with the Win7 operating system and associated files from the HDD ‘C’ drive. I would also backup the content of the ‘I’ drive and non system ‘C’ drive files for later restoration to the old HDD, which would then be used as an external drive for offline storage.
I therefore have the following questions regarding the process of cloning to the new SSD:

1) To support the cloning process I intend to leave the HDD ‘C’ drive in place and to install the new SSD into a 3.5” external drive caddy. The caddy has a USB 2.0 and an eSATA connection. My desktop has USB 2.0 and eSATA connections so the intention is to use the eSATA route.

Question 1: Given the desktop will be booted up with the SSD connected and the Acronis True Image CD inserted and the boot up sequence changed to read the CD. Will the Acronis True Image software detect the SSD external drive?

2) If the SSD will be detected by the Acronis True Image software then I intend to clone the HDD ‘C’ drive content to the new SSD drive.

Question 2: Once cloned can I then remove the old HDD from the desktop machine, remove the SSD from the caddy and install the SSD into the vacant 3.5” bay. Then boot up, change the boot sequence to boot up from the SSD and then once Windows 7 is up and running set the SSD drive letter to ‘C’.
Thank you.

I recommend that you remove your existing C: disk and attach it via USB to your PC and install your new SSD in place of your current C: disk to perform the restore operations of the C: Windows install. SSD can be fickle about which port they are attached to so is best to put that drive where it will live before installing or restoring to the an SSD.

I have attached several help guides to describe Acronis recommended procedures.
