Cloning partition to smaller SSD

Thread needs solution

I am running Windows 7 Ultimate with SP1. I am using TI HD 2013. I have a Toshiba 1tb HDD that is partitioned into 2 500gb drives.

I have ordered a new barebones system with an Intel i7 coprocessor with 16gb ram. I did not order any HDD's with my new system. I have a ADATA 128gb SDD that I want to migrate my Win 7 OS to for my new system, then use the 1tb drive to store data files on.

My problem is: when I clone the 1tb HDD drive to the 128gb SDD, True Image partitions the SDD into 2 partitions (like the 1tb HDD) (2 62gb partitions) and copies the OS files into the first partition. The second partition has only two folders - Recycle Bin and System Volume Information. I was able to use the manual feature and tell True Image to ignore Drive D on the 1tb HDD which resulted it the configuration on the SDD that I just described.

My question is: How can I work around this issue, so that the SDD will not be partitioned into 2 separate partitions and only copy the Win 7 OS on to the drive? The OS and program files from Drive C are approximately 50gb, so I should use less than 1/2 of the 128gb SDD and have room to expand with new programs and upgrades as needed.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I appreciate all help you can provide.

The easiest way to do this with TI 2013 is to back up (not clone) only the C partition, then restore it to the SSD. When you restore, expand the size of the C partition to fill the SSD. You can store the backup on the D partition of the HDD or on an external USB disk.

Or, if you have already cloned to the SSD and now have two partitions on it, use Windows 7 Disk Management to delete the second partition on the SSD and then expand the C partition to fill the SSD.

Mark,

Thanks for the information. Since I have already cloned the C: drive to the SSD, I will do as you suggest and use Win 7 Disk Management to delete and expand the partition.

Since I have had some trouble in migrating OS files to a new drive in the past, and have had to reinstall everything, I wanted to try to avoid this problem with my new system when it arrives. I ordered it without any hard drives and had this new SSD that I thought would be ideal for the OS and program files. After I get the new system up and running, I will install my remaining HDD's (1 1tb & 1 2tb internal) and other internal peripherals into the new system.

Again, Thanks for your help.

One issue that you may run into is the different hardware. The cloned SSD has drivers for your current hardware. Your new hardware may require different drivers. If you're lucky, Windows 7 will sort all of this out and install the correct drivers on first boot.
