A cloning question from a newbie

Thread needs solution

I have True Image 11. I've usually just done back ups.

Now I am trying to make an exact copy of drive that was installed in a laptop.
There are reasons to believe that this drive has an internal problem but the data on it is OK.

I have one IDE to USB adapter and an external HD that is much larger than the drive with the problem.
Using a desktop PC I cloned the laptop drive to the external drive.
The laptop is fairly old and the HD it had is no longer available, but can be had on eBay etc. I want to use an equivalent drive to avoid getting tangled up in any BIOS issues.

The Question: Will cloning from the larger external drive to a "new" laptop drive preserve the amount of space etc. of the old laptop drive? It is pretty near full.

I am doing this for a neighbor retiree and I am trying to keep expenses down. I know that I could buy a drive and another IDE to USB adapter and clone that way, but I am trying to get away with what I have on hand.

Thanks,
Charlie

Just to clarify. You are referring to version 11 and not the version 2011? Correct

Here is a link to a guide involving version 11.

Using the manual mode, under user control,
1. you can use the "as is" move option and the size cloned will be the same size as old disk. The remaining larger size will be unallocated space and not used.
2. Or, if you want all space used, that is also possible using either automatic mode or you can use the manual mode and manually resize the partitions to consume the additional space. It really is a matter of user choice and how the options are utilized.

understand the clone will destroy any and all data on the external target.
