Cloning source and target both connected via USB
I currently run True Image 2010. Will either this version or a newer version allow me to connect a source drive with the XP operating system to USB and another blank target drive to USB and clone a copy. Both drives would be used in the original XP computer. This computer runs shows and we need to be able to swap in a cloned drive to minimize the time a show may be stopped do to a drive problem. Both drives are internal drives and I temporarily remove them and run the cloning process on a laptop. For many production reasons it is far more convenient to do the cloning at another location on the laptop and then ship the drives back to the production site. Since all the necessary info is already on the source drive it should not matter what configuration is on the laptop that runs the cloning process.
I tried to get a similar answer about Norton Ghost but everyone on their forum insisted that the source drive had to be already mounted as an internal drive.
So I am looking to see if Acronis can handle this.

Rather than a clone, the backup and restore procedure of 2010 is also an option.
A backup image file of the source disk could be made and retained. The source disk should be mounted in its actual home during the creation of a disk option backup.
When a replacement is needed, the 2010 restore procedure could be used to create a replacement disk(s).
If the target of the clone or the restore is not inside the actual machine, then you will need to test whether the clone or the restore will produce a bootable disk.
Whether you clone or use the backup and restore method, either procedure should be done with the laptop booted from the TI Bootable media method.
Two usb docking station such as the Thermaltake usb docking station could function as the usb holders for each disk for use as in cloning or when restored.

The advantage of restoring a backup is that you have a good backup copy of the disk when the disk was in working condition.
The procedure you are suggesting is not the recommended procedure but the only way to be sure would be to test it and you already have 2010 available.

You'll have to try it and see if works on your equipment. It might; might not.
