I have a scheduled backup of my critical data to the cloud, and it's been humming along for a long time. Now it stops, waiting for user input (retry, ignore, etc.) when it hits outlook.pst unless Outlook has been completely shut down. My regular (to a local USB drive) works fine.

ah, I've been getting these strange 'access to the file is denied' errors and prompts. Will close Outlook tonight and test.

Something I've just noticed is that with a Cloud backup there is no Pre/Post command option. Why? I backup my .pst files locally and have routines to close and restart Outlook and could have used them but this is not available for Cloud backups?

Not too happy also that for support I would now have to pay as since buying my grace free support has expired BUT upgrading the software version has introduced errors that need support.

Well, I was able to figure out that some process had part of the PST file locked. This isn't a normal state. Once I rebooted, the cloud backup went just fine regardless of whether or not Outlook was running. Why it happened, I'll never know; but it was clearly not a problem with TI.

cool. I tested and it wasn't Outlook causing the issue. Even rebooted and ran True Image with nothing else running.

The problem/bug was that it was looking for a directory that doesn't exist and never has!

No, that directory doesn't exist on my system. I took that line to mean that there was something wrong with the reporting mechanism; but looking at what happened to you it looks more like there's a problem with the way TI walks the directory tree.

Not that you've pointed me in that direction, I see that my backups are still logging the same kind of warning; but look what happened:

TI seemed to be losing its place. First (line 74) it tried to find a non-existent directory; reported that it didn't exist; and bailed on that part of the backup. Then it looks like TI looked for another directory, which exists and it found. This second backup phase worked okay. I verified the actual file versions on the cloud, and confirmed that files in C:\Users\Jerry Schwartz\Documents\ were actually backed up properly.

I also verified, by looking at the cloud, that my Outlook files were NOT getting backed up! Looking at the file dates, I don't think this started with 6055; I think it started with TI 2015!

It's hard to guess how TI's cloud backup works, but when I had 2014 my cloud backup was configured to back up two or three directory trees. One of those was C:\Users\Jerry Schwartz\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook\.

Scrolling through the settings that TI 2015 is using for my online backup, I can't tell what the heck it thinks it's supposed to do. There are three places where I see C:\Users\Public\Documents\ flagged for backup:

- Under the Desktop -> Jerry Schwartz tree
- Under the Desktop -> This PC tree
- Under the Desktop -> This PC -> Main Drive (C:) -> Users -> Jerry Schwartz tree

C:\Users\Public\Documents\ flagged for backup is flagged for backup in all three places. Since they all resolve to the same actual directory, I guess that's okay.

HOWEVER, C:\Users\Jerry Schwartz\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook is not flagged for backup anywhere! This makes no sense at all. If TI cloud backup doesn't think it's supposed to back up C:\Users\Jerry Schwartz\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook, then why did it through an error message? Now, it's stopped trying to back up that directory.

It looks to me as though this backup job got corrupted during the update from 2014 to 2015. Changing the settings on the existing job didn't work, so I created a new one from scratch. It seems to be working, although it hasn't finished yet.

Fortunately, my local disk backups seem to be fine. A spot check of those backups show what I expect to see.

The new cloud backup job just failed to lock a file, just as the old one did. It must be my PST file, because that's what missing from the cloud storage. I broke down and bought a PPI: This is my critical data, after all, and the whole point is to have a copy off site in case of some disaster, such as a fire.

If I don't get something better than a dumb noise, I'm going to demand my $20 back and hire someone to put a curse on them.

very strange and my issue only started to happen after the 6055 update.
I'd share you with some routines to close and open Outlook but with Cloud backup, curiously, you can't have pre/post commands. Could you schedule a job to copy your .pst files to another place before the backup and then put them to the cloud rather than the locked ones?

No doubt I could, but my local disk backup is working. Besides, it would be easier to back up my PST file directly to one of my (zillions of) other clouds.

I wonder how long it's supposed to take to get a call back when you buy a PPI? They said someone would get back to me, but it's been 24 hours and I haven't heard a peep.

Well, I called Acronis. I expected to wind up in limbo again, but this time I was connected directly to a support engineer. After a lot of horsing around (3+ hours), the conclusion was what I expected: I'm screwed.

If a file is modified while being backed up to the cloud, then Acronis cloud backup will fail to back it up. Obviously, the odds of that happening increase with the size of the file. That's why, for me, it's my PST file that is failing right now. However, I also do video editing; and sometimes a render will take overnight. Those files won't get backed up either (although, in all fairness, they wouldn't be worth much).

I had always thought that the "usual" (local) backup used Windows's shadow file system mechanism to back up files that are in use. I'm not sure, at this point, whether it does or not. Clearly, though, the cloud backup service doesn't.

==> Apparently, TI only uses the volume snapshot service.

I changed my cloud backup so that it doesn't try to back up my .PST file.

I'm still getting the following warning, though:
