Confusion over November Update

Thread needs solution

TWO QUESTIONS:
How do I update TI2010, and how do I check which version of TI2010 software I am using?

I have True Image 2010. I logged on to the website and found that there was an update available called "Build # 6029" and dated November 3, 2009. I have since wasted considerable time trying to update.

1. I opened TI2010 and tried to find either the Build number or the date of the build. No luck.

2. I searched the Acronis website for some time trying to find where such information might be hidden, and eventually found an obscure reference to its being on the "Help" file that I could access from the "Home" screen. No luck.

3. I searched the "Help" file. Big mistake, because TI2010 is backup software, so "version" and "update" are words used on almost every page of its help file. Searching for "build" found only occurrences of "Builder", even when I enclosed the word in double quotes as in Google.

4. Since I knew that my software was installed long before November 3, I downloaded the update anyway - TrueImage2010.6029_s_en.exe. But it wasn't an update at all. It gave me a menu, one of which was "Check for updates". I did so, and was told that my software was up to date.

5. After more searching on the Acronis website, I found an obscure instruction to press the "Repair" button. There is no repair button on the update software screen.

6. I downloaded the update again, but it made no difference.

7. After more wasted time going around and around technical support screens, I found the forum, then after more confusion I managed to work out how to join these forums so that I could post my questions.

Whatever happened to the buttons "About True Image 2010 . . ." and "Check for updates . . ." that are standard on almost all other software?

By the way, I recently fell for the trap of pressing the "update" button on one of my recent backups, only to have the previous backup entirely removed as the first step. I'm glad to read that this has been fixed in the new build.

For the build number hit the Alt key and near the top a menu will appear with Help in it. Click Help.

As mentioned, pressing Alt will show the menu at the top - choosing help and about will show the current version you have installed.

If it's an older build than 6029 then just start the 6029 installer and install over the top of the existing build (or completely remove your existing installation before installing the new build). Choosing update during the installation routine just checks to see if there is a newer build available than the one you're trying to install - it's not checking for updates of your current installation.

Plse note - if you're running W7 there are problems being reported with build 6029 so you may wish to stick with 5055 for the time being (see other threads posted here about the problems - I for one had to revert back to build 5055).

I agree with your suggestion that there should be a 'check for update' option within ATI itself to allow for updates to be installed more easily.

Hope this helps.

Just a note, a lot of people have had issues just installing on top of the previous build. It's recommended you uninstall the old one before installing the new one to minimize issues.

Hi,
i had exactly the same experience as cayley wrote, and im still not sure how to update now from TI2010 buid 5055 to 6029. I dont want to uninstall befor installing, because my scheduleplan was a lot of work.
I cant understand this confusing issue, every little freeware makes this more comfortable, sorry

You might try making a minor change to your scheduleplan - noting the time. Locate a file (s) that has that time stamp, and save it somewhere safe.

After uninstalling 5055, locate the same files in 6029 and rename them (tack on "-orig" or some such thing). Note, that you should not be running Acronis while doing this.
Then: copy over the files you saved earlier, and run the program. With Luck, you'll find your scheduleplan. Assuming Acronis hasn't changed format, or file name. You might ask on the Forum first, if the files exist at the same location.

Not only did I uninstall it but I went into the registry and removed every mention of 2010, Acronis, True Image and any other possible keyword related to this crap update. I started completely clean .... no schedules, nothing.

Total FAIL (under Win 7 Ultimate 64 at least - haven't tried anything else). They don't even acknowledge the problems that many are having.
