Delete interim backups?
If I make a Full backup on a Monday, say, and then daily differential backups for the next six days but have no need to access them, would there be any problem in deleting the interim six files and running differential again?
I suppose I'm asking, does TI go entirely on contents of disk for file differential or is there file tracking in the registry which would make my simple strategy problematic?

I had seven days worth of of backup, one full backup followed by 6 days of differential backups.
I moved the six differential backups to another folder and did a new differential on the original full back up. Thus there were 7 days between the full back up and the next differential.
The differential verified ok but was smaller than I expected at 2.5GB, my full backup being 156Gb. It had verified OK according to the log but when I tried to mount it, reported 'this volume cannot be mounted'.
So the answer to my question would appear to be, no you cannot do this.

Yes, it would appear your testing indicates this. What about putting the 6 files back and see if you can mount the new diff.
What number did it assign to the new diff?

I'd actually deleted the 6 diffs but tried again with a new full backup on which I'd done one differential backup. I removed the diff and ran TI again. The file names were c-d_w04_12_2010.tib and c-d_w06_12_2010.tib, reflecting the date of the backups.
This time the diff both verified AND mounted properly. So the answer to my question appears to be yes in this case but no in the other. Definately a maybe, I'd say!
In theory with a differential backup you only need one diff and the full backup so there should be no problem in dumping some and making another. Maybe someone from Acronis has an answer?

I think this is an important question as the point of going differential over incremental is that you are NOT dependent upon prior differentials, only the original backup.
I don't think it's uncommon to delete interim differentials to free up disk space and they obviously grow in size the more you perform.
Would love to see and official answer from Acronis on this!

Yes, I'd like a definitive answer too. Maybe Acronis people read this forum?

It doesn't look as though Acronis staff do read these posts.
