Device not ready errors during whole disk backup
Hi I have just upgraded from Acronis True Image 2014 to 2015. When I try to back up using the whole disk option I keep getting random read errors. A box comes up saying disk read error device not ready. Each time I try to run the backup I get random read errors at different points during the backup. I checked the whole disk with windows 8 chkdsk but no errors are detected. I did try downgrading to 2014 and running a whole disk backup and this completed without any errors. Any thoughts on why under 2015 I keep getting read errors device not ready.

Hi thanks for your reply have already done a full error check and bad sector check with chkdsk and it returned no errors. The errors that Acronis True Image 2015 keeps reporting are random. Each time I run a backup it reports different read errors with the error code device not ready. The last backup I tried to do it completed all of the windows ssd drive without error but couldn't backup my 1tb data drive with the same error read error disk 1 device not ready. I could understand it if it was happening on one drive only but its not. I even tried changing the location of the backup but still the same result. What puzzles me is under 2014 I can run a backup and restore it without problems.

That's strange...
A similar thing happened to me as I was beta testing testing TI2015 with W8.1 on an old laptop. TI complained of bad sectors that couldn't be read. The standard chkdsk available from within Windows reported no errors, but it seemed to have that info already available as it said there was no need to run chkdsk anyway. If I ran it anyway it completed in seconds and said all was well. Running from a command prompt was a different story and it found and reallocated the bad sector/s and TI was happy after that.
Like yourself, I never had any problems with that disk and other versions of TI. (The laptop I used was 8yr old and has 1000's of hours on the HDD but it was fine with TI after the check)
dunno what to suggest to you on that score. You could... the beauty of disk imaging if you can complete a backup... install say HDD sentinel and get a report on your disk health.
I did that here (on advice) after mentioning I had encountered a problem with TI and bad sectors,

Dave.
Just to check your answer to Mooly, did you run checkdisk from a command prompt with the switches that Mooly suggested?
Have you tried running a repair install of TI 2015 especially if you have upgraded from a previous version of TI, it might be that SNAPAPI hasn't been updated, this could cause the problem you've started seeing.

Hi when I ran chkdsk I ran it from the command prompt using administrator. PC asked to restart then windows 8 went through checking and repairing drive. I ran chkdsk this way for each hdd in PC. I have tried repairing the install but nothing changed. One thing I will try is to remove all traces of 2014 then reinstall and then update to 2015. Will post again with results.

i just received a 'device not ready' msg. i am using a seagate drive which always works, until now. Running win 10.
there is Nothing wrong with the drive. This is an acronis bug.
WHAT I FIND TRULY INCREDIBLE IS THAT SINCE MY ACRONIS PRODUCT IS JUST PAST WARRANTY, I CANNOT CONTACT THEIR SUPPORT DIRECTLY. IF I HAD KNOWN THIS I WOULD NEVER HAVE PURCHASED THIS PODUCT. INCREDIBLE. WHO BLOCKS THEIR CUSTOMERS NOWADAYS????

Diane,
Are you running TI 2016 in Windows or from the Linux version?
Did Windows 10 install a new build, that is, are you on the preview fast ring? Current preview build is at 10:14271 for fast ring. There have been recent updates for those systems not on the preview circuit.
Are you sure that the 'device not ready' message related to your Seagate drive, and is your drive internal or external?
How is your imaging/backup task set up?
Did you have any SD card readers attached in this instance?

I am seeing the drive not ready message as well. Just upgraded to Windows 10 and for the first time in about a month decided to use acronis to backup to Western Digital Drive mybook. I was running Windows 8.1 and acronis was working fine.
Is there a fix for this does anybody know!!!

Looks like it finally started working, I needed to delete the my backups and create a new one and after the queued message finally went away the backup started

Common errors is a usb cable with loose connections. You might consider replacing the cable. I found the cables on my WD usb3 external to be very sloppy.
Another possibility is the external going to sleep. Disable the sleep settings for the usb device.
